When I was editor of the then-Delaware State News back in the 1970s, I proposed — only partly in jest — that the Delmarva Peninsula should become a state. Has the time finally arrived?

It is certainly a temptation to term-limit members of Congress, as party polarization has increased and productivity has decreased. However, that was not the view of the Constitution’s framers nor a current solution to our toxic politics.

There certainly is a government coup; it has been going on for decades, only it is being conducted by the high-level government employees and agency heads who have taken away the authority of running the U.S. government from our elected officials, by bypassing laws and ruling by agency regulations.

Donald Trump has always presented himself as some kind of “Superman.” He even bragged that, in his second term, he will “fix everything” (an internet search will reveal links to this).

Anyone who reads the letters from Mr. Frank Daniels knows that to suggest to him that the Trump presidency is anything but akin to the second coming is a fool’s errand (“Who’s really representing us in Congress?”).

America spoke Nov. 5, 2024, and a lot of Delaware (i.e., New Castle County) didn’t hear and/or get the message. We replaced an outgoing Democratic senator with our Democratic congresswoman and, in turn, replaced that congresswoman with the first transgender member of Congress.

President Donald Trump has proposed eliminating the penny. Even though the U.S. Mint lost $85 million making such coins in 2024, getting rid of them might be easier said than done. What do you think about this possible change to change? Do you use pennies often? Have you stopped paying with cash altogether?

We need a Department of Government Efficiency in Delaware. As a resident of Delaware, I would like to put in layman’s terms my understanding of our ever-rising utility bills. Issues began when the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative was introduced in our state.

On Monday, the U.S. Senate tried to advance a bill that would protect our young girls and women in sports, and both of our senators, Democrats Chris Coons and Lisa Blunt Rochester, voted against it, not allowing the proposal to advance.

In the middle of Super Bowl LIX, President Donald Trump posted on social media that he was getting rid of the penny. Since the lowly penny in 2024 cost about 3.7 cents to make — meaning the government loses money on every coin — the announcement might seem practical at first glance.

Ostensibly, the White House meeting Friday was to sign an economic “deal” between Ukraine and the U.S. However, looking at and listening to the “conversations” between Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Donald Trump/Vice President JD Vance was very painful.

The headlines report that the Department of Government Efficiency could give out $5,000 stimulus checks. As Mr. Elon Musk and Mr. Donald Trump dangle such treats before the American taxpayers like candy in front of children, they purchase our support with our own money.

The question regarding implementation of tariffs on foreign goods piqued my interest. I looked at just the Canadian influence on First State finances by consulting the website of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Our foreign trade relationships are not to be taken lightly.

So, while we struggle with ever-increasing electric bills, eggs almost requiring a loan to buy and a huge loss of state income due to corporations leaving because of an activist judge, our senators and representatives hold a town hall, but all they do is repeat their usual mantra of “Donald Trump is bad. It’s all his fault, so you should hate him, too.”
