The question regarding implementation of tariffs on foreign goods piqued my interest. I looked at just the Canadian influence on First State finances by consulting the website of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Our foreign trade relationships are not to be taken lightly.
The site stated that the state’s largest market is Canada. Delaware exported $720 million in goods to Canada in the latest reported year. It pointed out that agriculture in Delaware is dependent on exports and that international investment creates jobs for Delawareans.
In 2015 (latest data available), foreign-controlled companies employed 25,000 Delaware workers. Major sources of foreign investment in Delaware included the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada. Foreign investment in Delaware was responsible for 7.1% of the state’s total private-industry employment in 2015.
