Millsboro police events include helmets, treats and beards

MILLSBORO — In the coming weeks, some Millsboro police officers will likely be sporting facial hair.

With town council’s approval Oct. 7 of a temporary waiver to departmental grooming standards, officers pledging a monthly $25 contribution will be permitted to grow beards as participants in the department’s annual Whiskers for Wishes, a holiday tradition in partnership with Millsboro’s Grace United Methodist Church.

“All funds go to Grace UMC to sponsor families,” said Millsboro Police Chief Brian Calloway, who again plans take part in the beard-growing event.

In 2023, the Whiskers for Wishes program raised $3,974.

A temporary growth of facial hair has been allowed since 2016 through the Millsboro department’s fundraising initiative supporting Millsboro Grace UMC and its effort to bring Christmas cheer to needy children and families.

The approved time for Whiskers for Wishes is Nov. 1 through Dec. 31.

The one exception is beards/facial hair are not allowed when wearing a Class A uniform.

Bike helmet give-away

On Friday, Oct. 18, Millsboro police will team with the Millsboro Fire Company in an event at East Millsboro Elementary at which Chief Calloway hopes to distribute hundreds of bicycle helmets free to children.

“Our plan is to give every student at that school a bike helmet. We have 800 bike helmets,” said Chief Calloway.

This will replace the department’s Bike Rodeo which has been held annually in the Lowe’s parking lot in the Peninsula Crossing Shopping center.

“We have found that is more successful. We can give more helmets to kids,” Chief Calloway said.

Halloween bonanza

The Millsboro Police Department is again teaming with The Journey: A Wesleyan Church for a community Halloween goodie-gathering event on Thursday, Oct. 31.

The police event in the Town Center parking lot will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the time approved by the town council for observance of Halloween trick or treat townwide.

“We usually have 300 to 400 children that come,” said Chief Calloway.

It is for children 12 and under in costume.

Millsboro Fire Company will provide traffic control for pedestrian safety visiting the police event and the many activities at The Journey.
