Letter to the Editor: Some observations of Delaware drivers

Posted

It’s time for my semiannual findings on Delaware drivers. The following is not a bias to any particular group and/or person but rather a review of my own recent experiences while driving, mostly in Kent and Sussex counties.

It seems that tailgating has become a Delaware sport. Females of all ages are taking part with gusto. Too many gals seem to have no concept of keeping a proper distance from the vehicle in front of them. Sorry, ladies, but you seem to know how to operate the vehicle, but often, you’re not good drivers. There’s a difference. Applying makeup, doing eyelashes and attending the phone are not considered sound vehicle operation. Also, young males are equally guilty. Now, pickup trucks are permitted to tailgate. It’s one of their many rights as specified in their owner’s manuals and registration (no, it’s not).

There hasn’t been any improvement in drivers going around an outside curve on our back roads, as they often cross the centerline and risk a head-on crash. This has to be laziness, lack of driving ability and stupidity.

In the Sept. 3 Delaware State News, it was reported that the Delaware State Police will be checking speeding (“State police to ramp up speeding enforcement”). That’s good news, since the speeding taking place constantly on U.S. 13 is overwhelming. On Del. 1, it’s sometimes “go as fast as you can.” Stiff fines might slow things down a little.

On the positive side, southern Delaware drivers seem to be courteous.
