High Tide and Runoff Combine to Cause Street Closures Downtown Salisbury

SALISBURY, Maryland — Due to rising tides and runoff from last night’s storm, the City of Salisbury has closed several streets in the downtown area. The intersection of Baptist and Main is closed in all four directions. East Market Street is closed between Baptist and Poplar Hill Streets. And Market Street is closed West of the Wicomico County Library next to Lot 11.

Fitzwater street remains closed between West Main and Pearl. Lake Street is currently closed between Route 50 and West Main as well as between Burton and King.

City policy is to close flooded streets until we are sure the area is safe. Please keep that in mind as you move about the City through tomorrow. Crews will continue to monitor the situation and make necessary changes to traffic patterns.

Please remember to exercise caution and stay safe on the roads. Most importantly, do not attempt to cross high water. Just six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling. According to the National Weather Service, water may be deeper than it appears and can hide hazards such as sharp objects, washed-out road surfaces, electrical wires, chemicals, etc. A vehicle caught in swiftly moving water can be swept away in seconds. Twelve inches of water can float a car or small SUV and 18 inches of water can carry away large vehicles.
