Posted

GEORGETOWN — One person died and another was in critical condition in a house fire Thursday.

Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office spokesman Michael Chionchio said the Georgetown Fire Company responded to the 200 block of East Market Street shortly before 8:30 a.m. for a report of a house on fire. Firefighters encountered a two-story home engulfed in flames and a bystander reporting two people trapped inside the burning home, he said.

Firefighters rescued an 87-year-old person and an 18-month-old child from the burning home, Mr. Chionchio said.

They were transported to Beebe Healthcare in Lewes. The 87-year-old victim was pronounced deceased in the emergency room. The 18-month-old was flown to the Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington and was listed in critical condition Friday.

State fire investigators and detectives from the Georgetown Police Department are conducting the investigation into the circumstances of this fire. Heavy fire damage was estimated at $300,000.

Police asked anyone with information on the fire including any cell phone or home security video footage to contact the State Fire Marshal’s Office – Sussex Division at 302-856-5600.
