Identity theft case in Georgetown brings charges

Posted

GEORGETOWN — A 32-year-old Dover woman was charged with identity theft Friday.

Delaware State Police said troopers were called to the 500 block of West Market Street for a reported fraud. They determined that a 51-year-old Millsboro man’s account at Fulton Bank had been fraudulently overdrawn and subject to closure. A Financial Crimes Unit detective investigated and found several false transactions on the account.

Troopers identified Akiara Deshields as the suspect who used the victim’s ATM card and forged a fictitious check in the victim’s name, authorities said, adding that the Millsboro man and Fulton Bank sustained an undisclosed financial loss due to the fraud.

An arrest warrant was issued, and authorities said Ms. Deshields was taken into custody by the Georgetown Police Department.

She was charged with identify theft, possession of instruments facilitating identify theft, second-degree forgery, unlawful use of a payment card over $1,500, attempted theft by false pretense over $1,500, criminal impersonation and theft by false pretense under $1,500. She was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and released on her own recognizance.
