LEWES - Sussex Central High’s Malachi Stratton began his quest for a third-straight state title with a quarterfinal pin as the DIAA individual state tournament got started on Friday night at Cape Henlopen.

The tourney concludes today in Lewes with the semifinals starting at 11 a.m. and the finals scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

A total of 25 Henlopen Conference wrestlers advanced through to the semifinals.

Stratton, the top seed, is one of three Henlopen Conference wrestlers to reach the semis at 120 pounds. On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Anthony Andrews of Sussex Tech will square off with No. 3 Cole Moffett of Caesar Rodney.

At 106, there’s guaranteed to be a Henlopen wrestler in the finals. Cape Henlopen’s top-seeded Austin Guerrieri will face Caesar Rodney’s Benjamin Donato, the fifth seed, in one semifinal matchup.

At 113, third-seeded Mason Milligan of First State Military made it through to the semis.

At 126, Caesar Rodney’s Trevor Copes moved within a win of reaching his fourth-straight state finals. He’ll take on Sussex Central’s Chase Murray, the fourth seed, in the semifinals.

There will be another all-Henlopen semi at 132 where top-seeded Evan Cordrey is matched up with No. 5 Connor Smith of Laurel.

Sussex Central’s fifth-seeded Talan Savage will get the chance to stop Caravel’s Eddie Radecki in one of the 138 semifinals. Radecki, a junior who won his first state title as an eighth-grader, is trying to stay on pace to be Delaware’s first five-time state champion.

At 144, Cape Henlopen’s Nicholas Walker — the No. 1 seed — and Sussex Tech’s No. 2 Dustin Elliott both pinned their way into semifinal matches.

Sussex Tech’s Bennett Brumbley, the 8th seed, upset Laurel’s top-seeded Stanley Peete with a 10-8 decision in the 150-pound quarterfinals. Lake Forest’s No. 2 Case Dempsey advanced in the other bracket.

Dempsey will face No. 6 Hunter Durham of Milford, who knocked off No. 3 Jack Duffy of Tower Hill.

At 157, Lake Forest’s Nurrideen Ahmad-Stats (No. 3 seed) continued his quest for a second state title by reaching the semis with Laurel’s fourth-seeded Xavier Limehouse advancing on the other side of the bracket.

Smyrna’s Jesse Dixon followed up his Henlopen title at 165 by reaching the semis as the third seed.

Three Henlopen wrestlers reached the semifinals at 175. No. 2 Gabe Cannon of Sussex Central will take on No 3 Jayvion Taylor of Indian River with CR’s Owen Dixon also advancing through the quarterfinals.

Milford’s third-seeded Jordan Curry was the lone Downstater to make it through at 190.

At 215, Cape Henlopen’s second-seeded Patrick Donahue posted a second-period pin in the quarterfinals.

A pair of Henlopen wrestlers are still alive at heavyweight where Laurel’s Joseph Baynard (No. 3) and Smyrna’s Chijioke Eule (No.4) both advanced on opposite sides of the bracket.
