Former Millsboro officer pleads guilty to duty-related felony

GEORGETOWN — A former Millsboro police officer pleaded guilty to a drug-related felony of first-degree tampering with public records Thursday.

According to the Delaware Department of Justice, Matthew Dufour faced up to two years’ prison time for the offense, which will be vacated if he completes a Veterans Treatment Court program for substance abuse and mental health.

He also pleaded guilty to four misdemeanors — offering a false instrument for filing, two counts of possession of oxycodone and official misconduct, which are not eligible for diversion. He was sentenced to one year of probation for each of those offenses, which will run concurrently.

The Justice Department announced Dufour’s indictment May 22. He voluntarily resigned from the Millsboro Police Department prior to the plea agreement, authorities added.

Additionally, he surrendered his Council on Police Training certification and will not be able to work in law enforcement again, DOJ stated.

The department added that Dufour was a Millsboro police sergeant and evidence custodian, when an investigation revealed that he tampered with and used drugs stored in the department’s evidence locker.
