SEAFORD — A residential fire that left one person dead Sunday is under investigation, the Office of the State Fire Marshal said.

According to spokesman John Galaska, the incident, reported shortly after 9:30 a.m., occurred in the 8000 block of Hearns Pond Road.

The Seaford Volunteer Fire Department and Sussex County Paramedics arrived on the scene and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the occupied dwelling, Mr. Galaska said, adding that rescue attempts were unsuccessful, and a victim was found deceased in the home.

In addition, a Sussex County Paramedic was treated and released for injuries sustained during the rescue attempt. There were no other reported injuries.

Mutual-aid fire companies also assisted.

The State Fire Marshal’s Major Incident Response Team is investigating to determine the origin and cause. The Delaware State Police are also assisting.

Damage is estimated at $200,000, Mr. Galaska said.
