GEORGETOWN — Fiscally speaking, Sussex County has done it again.

This month, the Chicago-based Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada gave the county a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its fiscal year 2024 budget, which County Council adopted in June.

This is the sixth year Sussex has received the honor acknowledging its budget report, county administrator Todd Lawson announced at Tuesday’s council meeting.

The award is given to public bodies that have demonstrated an observance of the highest principles of governmental budgeting, according to GFOA.

According to a press release, it is presented by the same group that has, for two decades, applauded the county for its annual audit reporting and financial practices.

“Sussex County has a long and proven track record of excellent fiscal management, and that starts with each year’s budget,” finance director Gina A. Jennings said. “We are honored to once again receive this prestigious budgeting award, which is a reflection of our commitment to ensuring the public’s tax dollars are managed to the highest standard.”

To be recognized, a governmental entity must satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for an effective budget presentation, which must serve an entity as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications device.

In addition to the standard fare of projected revenues and expenditures, the documents must include an introductory background, an organizational chart, a narrative on the budgeting process and an outline of the financial policies and goals.
