Speak Up: How do we solve poverty issues?

Posted

On March 17, we began our Seeds of Need series, focusing on poverty in Delaware. With the state’s official poverty rate totaling 9.4% in 2023, what can be done to aid those living in impoverishment? Are the programs currently available helping? Why or why not?

  • Poverty is a tough subject. As said, it is as old as the beginning of time. Has always been here. People in need have to want to better their situations. Some just get too comfortable with all the handouts and free food. Welfare. Would rather panhandle than even look for work. God helps those who help themselves. The programs are there for everyone to improve themselves. — Denise Bella
  • Poverty is something that is as old as the start of time. Some are highly motivated to excel; others are fine with being in a “that’s good enough” mode. You can’t legislate work ethic or prosperity. Only the individual can go beyond where they are to where they want to be. — Howard Gaines III
  • Could start with reducing taxes. At the very least, use the taxes for our own people. — Earl White
  • One thing we can do is stop throwing money at every issue that comes along. Very few personal issues can actually be solved with money. — Dennis Mehrenberg
  • Stop funding illegal immigrants. Stop funding abortion and rewarding the lower classes who have children just to remain on welfare! — Rene VanSant
