Speak Up: Bill to create felony assault charge for injuring school staff tabled

Posted

A bill that would have increased penalties for individuals who injure school personnel was tabled by members of the House of Representatives’ Education Committee on March 13. The legislation’s defeat came just one day after the establishment of the Student Behavior and School Climate Task Force, which will study how student discipline contributes to learning and educator satisfaction, and develop recommendations on how to address these issues.

  • Or start holding parents liable. Maybe that would make them parent better at home. — Earl White
  • Why on Earth would this bill be tabled? Because it was presented by a Republican representative? Our current governor, district attorneys and legislators are quick to jump in front of the cameras when an assault occurs, claiming that they really want to “do something” to help curb violence in our schools toward students and school staff, yet when a thoughtful proposition is advanced, it gets tabled for the so-called excuse of needing more study. Hypocrisy at its best (worst). — Dennis Kirkwood
