Posted

NEWARK — A 54-year-old Smyrna man died when struck by a train Thursday, Delaware State Police said.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., police said, a CSX train was traveling from New York to Washington, D.C., in the area of 4949 Ogletown-Stanton Road. At the same time, a man was walking on the outside of the railroad tracks with his back to the oncoming train, according to authorities said.

Police said preliminary investigation suggested the man did not move from the track area after the train operator blew the horn. As a result, the front of the train hit the man, according to authorities.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

Investigation continues and police asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Det. E. Berkenbush by calling 302-660-3752. Information may also be provided by sending a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
