On Saturday night, the former Smyrna High standout put up his first big game since 2019 in Garden City (Kan.) Community College’s 24-16 loss to Hutchinson.

Knight ran for 119 yards on 13 carries, including a 77-yard touchdown run. For the season, the former Delaware standout has run for 210 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries while adding two catches for 18 yards.

His rushing yardage in the contest is tops in the MEAC this season and the most by a Hornet since Kareem Jones racked up 230 yards vs. Winston Salem State in 2008.

Through last weekend’s game, Wilkerson is No. 1 in the MEAC and 24th among all FCS players in rushing yards per game at 86.5 and also tops in the MEAC in total rushing yards with 428. He’s also second in the league in scoring with five touchdowns and tied for second in the MEAC with 30 points.

Also, Delaware State’s Kwannah Kollie was named the MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 37.8 yards on four kickoff returns, including a season-best 72-yard return to set up the Hornets’ first touchdown. It was Kollie’s second return of more than 50 yards this season.

Entering this week’s games, Kollie is second in the MEAC and 20th in FCS in kickoff returns at 26.2 yards per attempt.

Local auto racing

Bunting wins at Delmar: Local favorite H.J. Bunting held off the “invaders” and scored his first win of the year in the 25-lap Delaware Dirt Modified feature race on the 49th annual Camp Barnes benefit night at Delaware International Speedway on Saturday.

However the “invader,” Rick Eckert, the 2011 World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion, would made the drive to Delmar and picked up the win in the Super Late Model feature event.

Drivers in the Delaware Dirt Modified feature race had their eyes on the $4,949 prize.

With only four laps left to go, Bunting, Jordan Watson and Ryan Watt were all nose to tail, fighting for the lead. But on lap 24, the caution came out for Rusty Smith, which led to a one-lap shootout to the checkered flag.

Bunting led the cars to the single-file restart, where he rode the cushion all the way around and picked up his first win of 2021 at Delaware International.

Rick Eckert sailed away at the end and picked up the win in the Super Late Model feature.

The biggest class of the evening, 602 sportsman, had over 30 cars take the green flag for their

20-lap feature race. On lap 16, Joe Toth took over the top spot and led the remaining four laps of the feature and took home the win.

In the 20-lap RUSH Late Models feature, Matt Hill took over the lead after an early-race caution and put on a clinic for the remainder of the race.

In the Mod Lite division, veteran Tim White maintained control of the feature for majority of the race. But, after a string of cautions, Jimmy Wills took over the lead with five laps to go and posted the victory.

Other feature winners included Kerry King, Sr. in the Vintage Modifieds, Jay Lowman in the Delmarva Chargers and Robert Smith in the action-packed Super Truck race.

Racing will not return until Delaware International until Oct. 22 for the Delaware Champ Show Weekend.
