Roundup: Delaware State starts volleyball season with 3-0 record

The Delaware State volleyball team is 3-0 for the first time in more than 30 years after winning all three of its matches at the Hornets Invitational over the weekend.

DelState won all three matches by scores of 3-0, downing St. Peter’s on Friday and Bucknell and St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday at Memorial Hall.

Valerio Otero (30 kills, 31 digs) and Adriana Rodriguez (21 kills, nine blocks) represented the Hornets on the All-Tournament team.

DSU’s Alondra Maldonado was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her performance in the tourney. She had a team-high 37 kills on 71 attempts and tallied eight blocks.

The Hornets will look to start the season with four consecutive wins when they return to action on Tuesday at home with a 6 p.m. match against Manhattan.

College basketball

Hen men set non-conference slate: The Delaware men’s basketball team will open its season at Davidson (Nov. 9) and plays its home opener against La Salle (Nov. 17) as the Blue Hens announced their non-conference schedule on Monday.

Along with the 18-game Colonial Athletic Association schedule announced, the Hens will play a minimum of 14 home games at the Carpenter Center this season.

Delaware also heads to Estero, Fla. for three games in the Gulf Coast Showcase and faces Delaware State in Dover on Dec. 2.

UD women to play in Miami: The Delaware women’s basketball team will make a Thanksgiving trip to Miami as part of its non-conference schedule.

The Blue Hens host Princeton on Nov. 12 in their season opener. Florida International will host Delaware, Chicago State, and Eastern Michigan at Thanksgiving.

The Hens will also play at Delaware State on Nov. 19.

College field hockey

Virginia 3, Delaware 1: The 17th-ranked Blue Hens fell to the No. 8 Cavaliers on Sunday despite holding a 19-7 edge in shots.

With Delaware (1-1) trailing 2-0, Grace Hoepfner sent in a long feed above the 23-meter line to Kiki Oudshoorn, who netted her second goal in as many games.

But the Cavaliers added the second half’s only goal to earn the win.

College soccer

WOMEN, American 2, Delaware State 0: The Hornets played even with the Eagles for more than 68 minutes before falling on Sunday.

Brooke Steele scored both American goals.

Eriona Shabani had nine saves for the Hornets, including six without allowing a goal in the first half. American outshot DSU 15-2 in the contest.

Seton Hall 1, Delaware 0: The Pirates netted the game’s only goal in the 70th minute to pick up the win on Sunday.

Lauren Krinsky finished with three saves for the Blue Hens (1-3).
