REHOBOTH BEACH — A 27-year-old man was shot in the leg while in the Big Chill Surf Cantina parking lot Friday, Delaware State Police said.

Authorities said that at approximately 12:51 a.m., troopers responded to the cantina at 19406 Coastal Highway for a report of a shooting. Troopers received reports of a 27-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg at a nearby hospital, police said.

According to police, the preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was among a group of several subjects that were involved in a physical altercation in the parking lot of the restaurant. During the altercation, an unknown Black male suspect pulled out a handgun from a bag and fires one shot at the victim, police said.

Following the shooting, all of the subjects involved in the altercation fled from the scene, police said.

The victim was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle, where he was treated and released, police said.

Through investigation, police said, detectives identified the shooting suspect as Jonathan Blackwell, 28, of Milford. Police said he was apprehended in Pennsylvania on Sunday and is facing felony charges upon return to Delaware.

Attempts to locate Mr. Blackwell remain ongoing, according to police.

Police asked anyone with information on Mr. Blackwell’s whereabouts to contact Detective J. Hill at 302-752-3792 or by calling 911.
