GEORGETOWN – To an audience that may have surpassed 2023’s large turnout, Juneteenth – a federal holiday linked to freedom and the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas in 1865 - was celebrated in Georgetown Saturday.

A parade was followed by numerous activities and festivities at the historic Richard Allen School grounds, including entertainment, songs by the Sussex Community Gospel Mass Choir, Melinda Hudson’s rendition of the Black National Anthem, and calls for continued community unity.

Sponsors of this Juneteenth event included the Richard Allen Coalition, the Buffalo Soldiers Delaware Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority of Sussex County, Everlasting Hope Ministries, and Restoration Worship Center.

The Juneteenth federal holiday is observed on June 19 but is often celebrated on the third Saturday in June.
