Naturally, Georgetown girl dabbles in doggie treat business

GEORGETOWN – Several years shy of her teens, Perry Dickens has already got the jump on entrepreneurship.

Yearning for a trampoline, the now 11-year-old Georgetown girl ventured into the dog treat business several years ago to fund the purchase.

Her Perry’s Cups for Pups business offers apparently yummy Cups for Pups doggie ice cream (frozen yogurt) and Pup Cakes, all made with all-natural ingredients that are canine friendly.

“Everything is all good for dogs,” said Perry.

She notes that sample treats have been taste tested and approved by her dog, Ruger, a chocolate Lab.

“My dog will go crazy. When I was loading the cooler – and she knows what they are – she was already trying to lick them in the packaging. She was going bonkers,” Perry said.

Greek yogurt and all-natural peanut butter are main ingredients in the frozen treats, along with fresh fruit. Doggie ice cream flavors include peanut butter blueberry, peanut butter Milk-Bone and pumpkin apple.

Unsweetened applesauce, pumpkin, apple, whole wheat flour, banana, egg and baking powder are in the Pup Cakes.

“All natural ingredients. All dog friendly,” said Perry.

And friendly for humans, too.

Accompanied by her mom, Danielle Dickens, Perry set up shop Wednesday, June 19, at the Hops & Crops market sponsored by the Greater Georgetown Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Revelation Craft Brewery, the South Bedford Street staging venue.

Prices for Cups for Pups are $3 each or two for $5. Pup Cakes are $4 apiece or two for $6.

Business over the last 2 1/2 years has been good.

“I now have my trampoline,” Perry said proudly.

The proceeds Perry now makes she saves, with some going to embellish her room in the family home in Georgetown.

She also takes Cups for Pups to various craft shows in the area.

Perry recently completed fifth grade at Georgetown Elementary School and this coming year will be a sixth grader at Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences.

With an eye to the future, she plans to continue her doggie treat business.

“It’s fun. I like it,” said Perry. “I want to be a vet (veterinarian) when I grow up. So this is one way to start.”
