May the 4th fest a Cambridge first

CAMBRIDGE - On a weekend celebrating Star Wars and Cinco de Mayo, Cantina Bar/Fiesta vibes will rock two downtown Cambridge blocks with the inaugural May the 4th free street festival.

The 500 block of Poplar and 400 block of Race Streets will be closed to cars from noon to 5 p.m. this Saturday, the better to freely stroll and sample beer, tacos, and other tasty delights, plus three live bands, Ballet Folklorico la Esperanza de Cambridge performance, and 22 artists displaying their talents.

Early birds ninos, ninas, junior Starwalkers and Solos can create a painted pottery masterpiece, free of charge, from 10:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Vintage Venue, 415 Race St., courtesy of Wednesday Morning Artists and the Dorchester Center for the Arts.

Cannery Row will feature sounds of the AlliCats, the Sub Rosa Band, and My Dirty Little Secret.

From 12 to 4 DJ Heff will spin tunes in front of the former Jimmie and Sooks, providing music for the live dance performance from Ballet Folklorico la Esperanza de Cambridge, taking place at 2 p.m.

Five local eateries will be offering their take on tacos–Thai Italian, El Cabrito, The Dive Club, Vintage 414, and Taqueria Floritas. Additional Mexican-themed menu items will be available from each. Downtown favorites Blue Ruin and T’s Divine Sweets will round out the taste treats.

For those staying thirsty throughout, several beers sampling stations will be set up, featuring smaller cup sizes, from thirteen guest breweries including main sponsor RAR.

A galaxy of community sponsors helped keep the event free, including DCÀ, Cambridge Main Street, Summit Community Bank, Re/Max, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Patriot Steel Fabrication, Vintage 414, Taquieros Floritas, and 3ten Creative Design & Gift Gallery.

It was 3ten co-owner, artist Lori Dever, also on the Cambridge Main Street board, who originally brought the idea for the 4th Fest to RAR’s Toby Donovan, who wholeheartedly agreed to make it happen.

Dever will have her work on display with help from sister, co-owner, and kindred artist Sherry Christopher, along with others including Mike James and B.J. Wheatley.

James and wife Natalie, of 414 Vintage, Wheatley, DCA’s Barb Seese, RAR’s Toby Donovan will be among the twenty volunteers.
