Longacre: Character matters in presidential election

Posted

I have lots of reasons for choosing Joe Biden in 2024, but it all boils down to one thing: character.

Here is a short list of the “reasons”:

  1. Biden supports the constitution and rule of law.
  2. He supports Ukraine.
  3. He is for protecting the environment against climate change.
  4. He is for expanding health care.
  5. He is for defending a woman’s right to choose.
  6. He embraces commonsense gun regulations.
  7. He is for making it easier to vote.
  8. He rejects the theory of trickle-down economics.
  9. He believes the rich should pay their fair share of taxes.

Now, let’s talk about character. Biden cares about people other than himself. He cares for the common good. He has empathy for the less fortunate and for those struggling to pay their bills. He feels for what biblical scholars call the “Quartet of the Vulnerable”: the widow, the orphan, the immigrant and the poor. And he believes in facts and in telling the truth.

I think Gen. Mark Milley said it best in his farewell address. He thanked Biden for his “unwavering leadership” and added: “I’ve seen you in the breach, I've seen you on the watch, and I know firsthand that you are a man of incredible integrity and character.”
