Long-running Dam Mill 5K to benefit Millsboro Fire Co.

MILLSBORO — While the Dam Mill 5K will be held on a different day of the week, the same challenge and fun will continue.

The 41st annual event is set for July 28, moving to a Sunday from the customary Saturday date due to a scheduling conflict.

The run will begin around 7:30 a.m. at Cupola Park, where it will also end. The flat and fast out-and-back course encompasses portions of East and West State streets.

A cornerstone of the Seashore Striders Championship Series and a staple of the local running community, the Dam Mill holds a place in history. Said Millsboro town manager Jamie Burk: “I believe it’s the longest-standing (5K) race in the state of Delaware.”

Tim Bamforth, race director for the Seaside Striders, added that, to his knowledge, the Millsboro race is the sole “5K-only” event in the state — meaning other distances are not included. And he’s hopeful it will attract a huge field of runners and those who choose to walk.

The Dam Mill has benefited several nonprofits over its four-plus decades. In 2024, proceeds will go to the Millsboro Fire Co., which it has supported for several years.

John Hall, a fire company member, is among those in the Dam Mill Hall of Fame. He’s “been with the race since the beginning,” Mr. Bamforth said.

He also explained that the switch to a Sunday from a Saturday avoids a schedule conflict with another running event in Dewey Beach.

Advance registration is $25 through July 21. Race week sign-ups through July 27 are $30, while day-of registration, from 6-7:30 a.m., costs $35.

Registration can be completed online or through the mail. For information, visit seashorestriders.com.
