Local roundup: Woodbridge defeats Delmar 6-0 in high school football

Woodbridge High used a first-half touchdown to edge Delmar, 6-0, in a Class 2A, District III football matchup on Saturday afternoon.

The victory keeps the Blue Raiders unbeaten at 2-0 in District III, 4-0 overall.

The win also avenged a loss to the Wildcats in 2019. The two Henlopen South teams didn’t play last fall because of COVID issues.

Woodbridge has to turn around and play at 4-0 Laurel on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Delmar, which was celebrating Homecoming, fell to 1-1 in District. III, 1-2 overall after having a game postponed last weekend.

Boys’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 4, William Penn 0: The Riders netted all four of their goals in the first half of the non-conference win.

Derek Hawkins, Tate Wisniewski, Tebar Gomez and Trevor Sullivan all scored for unbeaten CR (7-0-1), while Kaden Childs made five saves. The Riders finished with advantages of 15-5 in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks.

Cape Henlopen 2, Brandywine 0: Tiarnan Hefferan and Aldo Hernandez-Becerra tallied second-half goals as the Vikings (6-2), won their fourth game in a row.

Dalson Case made a pair of saves for Cape, which out-shot the Bulldogs, 5-2.

Field hockey

Caesar Rodney 4, William Penn 0: The Riders posted their fourth shutout of the season to improve to 4-2.

Brandywine 7, Seaford 1: Sage Larimore tallied a first-half goal for the Blue Jays, who were out-shot, 21-2.

Volleyball

Delmarva Christian 3, Lake Forest 0: The Royals downed the Spartans by scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-11, on Saturday.

Delmarva Christian was paced by Sierra Troyer (8 kills, 1 ace, 9 digs), Elaina Millaway (6 kills, 3 aces, 11 digs), Rachel Fetterman (13 digs) and Tessa Kwiatkowski (14 assists, 6 digs).

College volleyball

Delaware State 3, UMDES 0: The Hornets extended their school-record win streak to 11 in a row with a hard-fought 3-0 MEAC victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday. The scores were 25-22, 25-23 and 25-20.

The Hornets (3-0 MEAC) improved their overall record to 15-1, the best mark after 16 matches in team history and tops among all MEAC teams. DSU’s overall win percentage was tied for third among all NCAA Division I teams entering tonight’s match.

Valeria Otero led a balanced DSU attack with a match-high 12 kills, while Alondra Maldonado added nine and newcomer Karen Cordero, a 2020-21 junior college All-America, had eight winners on 14 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage in the contest.

Hofstra 3, Delaware 1: The Blue Hens fell to the Pride in a CA match, 25-27, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25, to fall to 5-9, 0-5 CAA.

College cross country

DSU’s Norman sets mark: Delaware State’s Albert Norman, who set a school record at The Shore XC Invite just last week, broke his own record at the Don Cathcart Invitational hosted by Salisbury University.

The Sussex Central High recorded a time of 25:33.30, which shaved 24 seconds off his time from last week’s race. He finished third overall out of a field of 104 runners and was Delaware State’s only top-five finish in the race.

College golf

Hornets’ Khunsri leads event: Delaware State’s Nattavadee Khunsri is leading the field after the opening day of the Navy Fall Invitational.

Khunsri, the only player under par in the field of 44, posted a score of 67 (-5) to hold a five shot lead after day one of the competition. Highlighted by her performance, Delaware State is third in the 13 team field with a combined score of 309, five strokes first place Richmond (304). Sacred Heart is second in the field at 305.
