Local roundup: Delaware team one win from Little League World Series

Peter Hudson’s three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning ended up giving Naamans a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Pennsylvania in the Little League baseball Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Tuesday night.

Hudson’s homer staked the Delaware state champions to a 5-2 lead before Pennsylvania rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Pennsylvania had the tying run on third when Naamans reliever Josh Stiebel got a called third strike for the final out in the contest televised nationally on ESPN.

Naamans will play either Pennsylvania or Washington, D.C. on Friday at 3 p.m. in the Mid-Atlantic championship game in Bristol, Conn. Delaware has only had two teams ever play in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

Naamans, located north of Wilmington, also reached the World Series in 2003 while Newark National made it in 2013.

Naamans scored its only other two runs in the first inning on Tuesday. Hudson’s home run in the sixth came with two outs after a single and an error.

Quinn Mulvena had two of Naamans’ seven hits.

Softball

Major League World Series

Delmar, Md. 3, U.S. Central 1: Mid-Atlantic champion Delmar, Md. scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the third inning before winning its World Series opener on Tuesday.

Delmar plays New England champion Connecticut on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Greenville, N.C. in the 12-team championship in Little League’s age division for 11-12 year olds.


In the third, Delmar took advantage of two walks and three errors to score its three runs. U.S. Central champion Missouri could only one answer with a run in the top of the fourth.

Macy Rickards pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks to earn the victory. Averi Naugle, Elle Preston and Isabella Campbell scored Delmar’s runs with Kinsley Rayne and Kylie Hammond accounting for the Maryland sqquad’s two hits.

Local golf

Wagenschur wins DSGA event: Playing on his home course, Newark Country Club’s Alan Wagenschnur won Flight 1 of the 7th annual DSGA Delaware Super Senior Championship golf tournament on Tuesday.

Wagenschnur fired rounds of 69 and 73 for a total of 142 in the two-day tournament. He finished five shots ahead of Tom Kearns, Mike Moser and Raymond Pawulich, who all tied for second place at 147.

Walter Bell won Flight 2 with a score of 149; Dave Berger won Flight 3 with a 153 and William Wasserman took Flight 4 with a 167.
