Local roundup: CR shuts out Cape 8-0 in girls’ soccer

Allyson Durham netted the first three goals of the second half as Caesar Rodney High pulled away to an 8-0 victory over Cape Henlopen in Henlopen North girls’ soccer on Thursday evening.

Jada McCullough added two goals and three assists for the Riders (1-1), who bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Lake Forest on Tuesday.

Gabrielle Davis (1 assist), Kylee LaVere and Hannah Anderson also scored goals for CR while Gabrielle DiBartola made five saves. The Riders finished with advantages of 19-7 in shots and 4-2 in corner kicks.

Julie Heffernan made seven saves for the Vikings (0-2).

Polytech 2, Sussex Central 0: Megan Popp’s goal in the 55th minute broke a scoreless tie for the Panthers, who later picked up own goal.

Polytech held advantages of 18-3 in shots and 8-2 in corner kicks.

Central goalie Kathy Sanchez Garcia made 16 saves.

Sussex Tech 9, Dover 0: Lilly Short (2 assists) netted four goals, including the first three of the game, in the Ravens’ Henlopen North win.

Angela Miltenberger added a pair of goals with Alexandra Johnson making four saves. Sussex Tech out-shot the Senators, 15-4.

Campbell Gibson made six saves for Dover.

Indian River 4, Sussex Academy 1: The Indians tallied a pair of goals in each half before evening their record at 1-1.

Softball

Sussex Tech 9, Dover 2: Laniya Lewis hit a pair of homeruns with three runs scored and three RBI to pace the Ravens.

Sussex Tech, which broke the game open with five runs in the third inning, was also led by Journey Hopkins (2 hits, double, 3 RBI) and Kylie Kruger (3 hits).

Chelsea Johnson homered for the Senators.

Sussex Academy 7, Indian River 6: The Seahawks scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for the Henlopen South victory.

IR had scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 advantage.

Boys’ lacrosse

Smyrna 8, Milford 7: Jake Wagner scored the winning goal in overtime to lift the Eagles to the Henlopen North win on Wednesday night.

Wagner and Zarek Kolakowski tallied three goals apiece with Kevin Sarkissian contributing two goals and three assists for Smyrna (1-1). John Williams made seven saves as the Eagles out-shot the Buccaneers, 45-26.

Matthew Hague (3 goals, 1 assist). Landan Hajek (2 goals, 2 assists), Corey Messick (1 goal, 1 assist) and Shane Sylvester (1 goal, 1 assist) paced Milford with Brody McMillan making 12 saves.

Archmere 19, First State Military 0: The Auks blanked the Bulldogs in a Diamond State Conference game.

College football

DSU-UD game on TV: The Route 1 Rivalry football game between Delaware State and Delaware on April 10 will be televised on ESPN-2. The contest is slated for 6 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

The Blue Hens have appeared on ESPN’s streaming services numerous times over the years, but it marks the first time since the 2010 FCS National Championship game that they will appear nationally on the network.

Delaware is 9-0 in the Route 1 Rivalry and defeated the Hornets, 31-13, to open the 2019 season at Delaware Stadium. The contest on April 10 will be the first time the two programs have played in Dover.

College lacrosse

UD women’s game postponed: The women’s lacrosse game between Delaware and Towson, originally scheduled for Saturday in Newark, has been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the UD program.

A decision on rescheduling the game will be made at a later date. Fans who purchased tickets for this game will be refunded within the next 3-5 business days.

College triathlon

Hornets name coach: Delaware State has announced the appointment of Eric Kirouac as head coach of the university’s new women’s triathlon team, which is slated to begin competition later this year.

DSU announced in April 2020 it was adding women’s triathlon to its list of intercollegiate sports, becoming the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference to sponsor the sport.

Races are sprint distance, featuring an open water 750-meter swim, draft legal 20-kilometer cycling and a 5-kilometer run.

Kirouac, 25, is currently the owner and operator of TST Perform LLC, which specializes in training and developing endurance athletes.
