Delaware's winning streak ends with tough loss at Elon

ELON, N.C. — Delaware’s winning streak probably couldn’t last forever.

But the Blue Hens’ 73-67 loss to Elon in CAA men’s basketball on Thursday night was especially frustrating.

Delaware (8-5 CAA, 16-10 overall) saw its four-game winning streak end in large part because it committed a season-high 16 turnovers — including four in a row in one key last stretch — and made just 6-of-14 free throws.

The Hens had also won eight games in a row over the Phoenix, who are just 4-9 in the CAA, 11-15 overall.

“It was a tough night for us,” UD coach Martin Ingelsby said on his post-game radio interview on WDSD. “Obviously life on the road. ... We battled. We were down, we came back. We showed resiliency.

“We just didn’t have enough down the stretch on the defensive end. You’ve got to make some shots, too.”

Delaware did make a nice second-half comeback, erasing an eight-point deficit to take a couple two-point leads in the final 10 minutes. The Hens were still up 58-56 with 4:24 left when Elon went on a 14-2 run to take control, 70-60.

At one point down the stretch, Delaware just 1-of-8 from the floor.

Gerald Drumgoole. Jr. had a big night, netting a season-best 24 points after hitting a career-high six three-pointers. The Hens also got a fourth straight double-double from Jayre Davis (19 points, 11 rebounds) plus another one from Christian Ray (10 points, 12 rebounds).

But Davis, who is Delaware’s best free throw shooter at over 80 percent, was just 3-of-8 from the foul line. The Hens were also only 7-of-24 from three-point range — just 1-of-12 besides Drumgoole, Jr.

Mac McKinnon had 26 points, with T.K. Simpkins scoring 25 to pace Elon.
Delaware dropped into fifth place in the crowded CAA standings with the loss.

Free throws

Drumgoole. Jr.. added five assists to his stat line. ... Over the last two games, Delaware is just 9-of-39 from three-point range. ... The Hens play another road game on Saturday, at North Carolina A&T at 2 p.m.
