Athlete of the Week: Jalen Morris, Lake Forest football

Posted

Lake Forest High football player Jalen Morris was voted this week’s Athlete of the Week after doing a little bit of everything in the Spartans’ 52-14 win over Newark last Saturday.

On offense, the senior wide receiver/safety caught four passes for 125 yards and two of Lake’s first three touchdowns. He also ran for 10 yards.

On defense, Morris had an interception and a fumble recovery. He also kicked off and punted for the Spartans. Coach Freddie Johnson said the state-champion sprinter’s speed is a big asset.

“Jalen’s an exciting player,” said Johnson. “He’s one of the faster kids in the state. We really try to get him the ball because, if he can make someone miss a tackle, there’s a good chance he’s going to go in for seven. He really gives us an advantage because teams really have to pay special attention to him.

“He’s pretty busy. He likes being on the field. He wants to try to do everything. It’s always good to have kids like that.”

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
