Athlete of the Week: Alayna Gigliotti, Dover High field hockey

Posted

Dover High field hockey player Alayna Gigliotti was voted this week’s Athlete of the Week. The senior co-captain played a key role in a pair of wins for the Senators last week.

In a victory over Laurel, she had a goal and three assists. Then, in a 4-3 win over Caesar Rodney, Gigliotti scored two unassisted goals to help Dover to the victory. For the season, she has tallied nine goals and five assists while taking 44 shots.

“Alayna has been an essential part of our team’s success this season,” said first-year Dover coach Madi Cook. “If she’s not putting the ball in herself, without a doubt she was a part of getting us to the cage and creating many of those scoring opportunities.

“Our team would not be the same without her consistent hard work and effort. Alayna has really stepped into her leadership role this season and helped to shift our team culture to what it is now. Her dedication makes us a better team.”

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

This process is performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week’s honor.
