DOVER — A 29-year-old Magnolia man was arrested and charged Monday in connection with an alleged July 13 homicide in the Simon Circle neighborhood, police said.

Erick Morton, of the unit block of Cypress Branch Road, was taken into custody without incident as he arrived at the Dover Probation and Parole office for a routine check-in appointment in the afternoon, the Dover Police Department said.

Police said 35-year-old Jamal Weeks was shot to death at approximately 2:17 a.m. in the 900 block of West North Street earlier this month.

Charges against Mr. Morton include first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of firearm by person prohibited, possession of ammo by person prohibited and carrying a concealed deadly weapon.

Mr. Morton was arraigned in Justice of Peace Court and then held at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna, authorities said. No bail was given due to the first-degree murder charge.

The investigation was helped by both public assistance and surveillance video, police said.

Police said they could not disclose details regarding Mr. Morton’s connection to Dover and Mr. Weeks. No determination of a motive could be released either, authorities said.

There was no police comment on whether other suspects are sought in the case.

Dover Police detectives and Criminal Investigations Unit officers made the arrest at Probation and Parole, police said. Information on Mr. Morton’s probation status was not immediately available. Police would not comment on whether Mr. Morton made any statements at the time of the arrest.

Mr. Weeks’s family was notified of the arrest, Cpl. Hoffman said.

When announcing the alleged homicide at the time, police said Mr. Weeks was shot by an unknown suspect and later died from his injuries.

Detectives interviewed potential witnesses and residents as the investigation began, police said.

“Solving a murder is a difficult task, so to be able to solve this one within a relatively quick time period is a great success, but also speaks volumes about the amount of effort put forth by the officers working this case,” Cpl. Hoffman said.

Cpl. Hoffman said the handgun has not been recovered “at this time.”

Mr. Week’s death was the fifth homicide in Dover in 2015.

Arrests have been made in two homicide cases from April 30 and May 13. No arrests have been announced regarding cases from Jan. 25 and April 26.

Also unsolved is an August 2014 homicide in Simon Circle.
