MILFORD — A 78-year-old Smyrna man died in a four-vehicle crash on Del. 1 on Thursday.

According to Delaware State Police, the man was driving an Acura south on the highway at 6:35 a.m., when it struck a Chrysler. Following the collision, the Chrysler pulled to the median, and the Acura parked on the southbound shoulder.

Police said the Smyrna man exited his car and began crossing the southbound lanes of the road, into the path of a Toyota Sienna. The Sienna struck the man, who came to rest in the median.

After striking the driver, police said the Sienna began to swerve between the two southbound lanes, striking a Ford that was also traveling south.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of kin.

The driver of the Chrysler, a 28-year-old Dover man, and its occupants — a 25-year-old Camden woman and a 46-year-old Newark woman — were transported to an area hospital, treated and released.

The driver of the Sienna, a 66-year-old Laurel woman, was transported to an area hospital, treated and released. An occupant in that vehicle, a 15-year-old girl, was uninjured.

The driver of the Ford, a 43-year-old Woodside man, was also not injured.

The road was closed for four hours.
