Letter to the Editor: Public urged to participate in redrawing of Sussex council districts

Posted

The League of Women Voters of Sussex County is publishing its first-draft redistricting map for the County Council districts. This map, which can be found here, is for discussion purposes and may change as comments are considered.

Sussex County Council will be drawing the districts for the five councilmanic seats later this year.

Members of the community are encouraged to submit their own proposed maps to council by using the draft map at the link above, or you can go to davesredistricting.org to create your own map.

In drafting your suggested map, you may want to focus on the following:

  • Each district should consist of contiguous territory.
  • Each district should be close to equal in population.
  • Major roads, waterways, natural boundaries and municipal boundaries should be considered.
  • The districts should not be drawn to unduly favor any person or political party.
  • Communities of interest should be included in a single district and should not be divided. (A community of interest is any group of people who share common social, cultural, racial, ethnic and economic interests common to the population of that area.)

The public can submit map ideas by email to redistricting@sussexcountyde.gov.
