CAMBRIDGE – The historic town of Cambridge provided a spectacular backdrop for the return of the Ironman Maryland triathlon, part of the VinFast Ironman North America Series. Over 1,000 athletes from 46 U.S. states and 34 countries, regions and territories competed.

Some of triathlon’s top professional triathletes were on hand to compete in the race and for a share in the $100,000 prize purse. Michael Weiss (Austria) took the win in the men’s professional race with a finishing time of 06:59:47, while Alice Alberts (USA) topped the podium in the women’s professional race with a time of 07:56:40. 

Prior to the start of the triathlon, organizers made the decision to shorten the swim course to 918 meters (0.57 miles), due to the water conditions in the Choptank River caused by the wind and tide.

The race led athletes along a swim, bike and run through Cambridge and the surrounding areas. The swim took place in the Choptank River beginning at Gerry Boyle Park at Great Marsh. Once out of the water, athletes took off onto the 112-mile bike, a two-loop course that winds through Dorchester County and into the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.

Closing out their journey, athletes ran 26.2-miles around the region and through downtown Cambridge with an energetic finish at historic Long Wharf Park.

The race offered age-group qualifying slots to the 2024 Ironman World Championship with the women’s race taking place Sept. 22 in Nice, France, and the men’s race taking place on Oct. 26, 2024, in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i.

Following an announcement made on Wednesday, Ironman and the Dorchester County Department of Tourism, in conjunction with the County Council of Dorchester County, Commissioners of Cambridge and Sheriff of Dorchester County, agreed to a five-year agreement to keep the Ironman Maryland triathlon and the Ironman 70.3 Eagleman triathlon in Dorchester County through 2028. The race will return to Cambridge on Sept. 21, 2024.
