Fire destroys Taylors Island house
Four fire companies fought flames, high water
By Dave RyanTAYLORS ISLAND – The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating a fire Sunday that destroyed a home on Hooperstown Road.
At 11:55 a.m., a passerby spotted the fire, which had already completely engulfed the house, owned by Shakir McDonald. Taylors Island Volunteer Fire Company responded to the remote backroad, and was assisted by crews from Madison VFC, Neck District VFC and Church Creek VFC. In all, 30 firefighters were on the scene, taking 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
They experienced unusual conditions, with flooding from Tropical Storm Ophelia covering the road and reaching above the knees of the firefighters as they approached the structure.
“The firefighting conditions were certainly less than ideal,” a statement on the Taylors Island Facebook page said.
The two-story, wood-frame, single-family dwelling burned to the ground, sustaining an estimated $100,000 in damage. “The home had been unoccupied for several years,” information from the Office of the State Fire Marshal said.
There were no injuries or arrests, though the fire marshal is asking for information from the public regarding the event. Citizens may contact deputy fire marshals at 410-713-3780.
