Oh brother: Smyrna's Yamir Knight to join brother at JMU

SMYRNA — Yamir and Wayne Knight were a pretty formidable duo at Smyrna High the last few seasons.

Now the brothers look like they’re going to get the chance to see what they can do together at the college level.

Yamir Knight, who will be a senior at Smyrna this fall, announced on Monday that he is verbally committing to continue his football career at James Madison.

Wayne Knight is a freshman this fall at JMU, which is moving up from NCAA Division I FCS to the FBS level.

“To get the opportunity to continue to play with your brother is a great thing,” said Smyrna coach Mike Judy. “It’s very unique situation. I don’t know how many siblings go to a FCS-or-higher school together. Man, what a rare opportunity.

“I think it just speaks volumes about their bond and also their capabilities as football players.”

Both Knight brothers are offensive skill players with Yamir more of a receiver and Wayne more of a running back.

Last season, Yamir caught 43 passes for 852 yards and six touchdowns. He scored a total of eight TDs and 12 two-point conversions.

Yamir has earned an FBS scholarship despite the fact that he’s listed at 5-foot-9, 180 pounds. His strength and speed helped him catch the eye of college recruiters, though.

“The one thing about Yamir is he is an ultra, ultra-competitive guy,” said Judy. “He knows what he’s capable of.

“You talk about a kid that’s the perfect size, perfect speed, perfect intensity, great work ethic. He’s one of those guys — he just gets the job done. ... The speed stands out, there’s no doubt. When you watch him, you’re like, he’s pretty fast. Then you put a watch or a laser-timing system on him and you’re like, ‘Wow, that kid is really, really fast.’”

With older brother Will now at Connecticut, Yamir would be the third Knight to play at the FBS level. Of course, both Will and Wayne ended up in different schools after verbally committing before their senior year in high school.

At the moment, Yamir seems pretty sure of his decision. In announcing his choice he posted “110% COMMITTED!!”

Wayne also posted a photo of him and Yamir both in JMU uniforms.

“He’s put himself in a great position,” said Judy.

Ex-Wesley player joins Hens

Former Wesley College football player Mike Credle has announced that he’s going to finish his playing career at the University of Delaware.

A Glasgow High grad, Credle played at Lincoln University last fall after Wesley closed down.

The wide receiver was listed at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds as a junior at the Division II Pennsylvania school last fall. Credle was the only player on the squad with more than 12 receptions and caught the Lions’ only touchdown pass of the season.

He finished with 32 catches for 395 yards.

Extra points

Senior Markel Hollman, the former standout William Penn running back who transferred to Caesar Rodney, has reported offers from Air Force, Army and Navy among other schools. ... Dover High football/lacrosse player Tyir Trott is going to continue his lacrosse career at Ohio’s Walsh University. ... With Dover native Joseph Simmons (Salesianum) also a freshman offensive lineman at JMU, the Dukes could have three Kent County players on the roster by 2023.
