Indian River board fills both District 1 vacancies

GEORGETOWN — Two new Indian River School District Board of Education members representing District 1 were appointed Monday night with unanimous support.

Lisa Hudson Briggs and Kelly Kline will serve through June 30. They are assuming the seats previously held by Madeline Moses and James Fritz, who both moved out of District 1 and had to resign from the board.

A third applicant, Son-Djerry Cameus, recently withdrew from consideration for the District 1 vacancies.

Ms. Kline is the director of the Selbyville Public Library. During her 10 years as director, she said she has “gotten to know so many families and community members that are served by the IRSD. In that time, I have made so many friendships and heard about their concerns, the things that they care about, the things that they love and what their interests are.”

A state of Delaware retiree with nearly 33 years that included Social Services and Department of Elections, Ms. Hudson Briggs has been active in numerous school, civic, community, athletics and church organizations. She is a member of the Georgetown Fire Company Auxiliary.

“If you ask me a question, you’ll get an answer. We can agree to disagree, but it will be in the best interest of our district, and each concerned,” Ms. Hudson Briggs said.

An an Indian River High School graduate, Ms. Kline said she is proud to have this opportunity.

“I am a strong advocate for community learning as well as literacy. You can see me at any school event or community event, handing out books for free to kids because the more books they have in their hands, the more literate they’ll be, and the stronger their basis for learning will be,” said Ms. Kline.

“Really, it’s on this foundation of my experiences, and also the timing, that I would like to offer my service to the school board in District 1.”

A member of Sussex Central High School’s class of 1981, Ms. Hudson Briggs and her husband have grandchildren attending district schools.

“I care about students. I care about parents. I feel the need now and my desire in my heart to do more,” said Ms. Hudson Briggs.

“My focus and desire is to hopefully be innovative in increasing our test scores for our district, and also decrease discipline issues. And, to keep up the amazing positive academic achievements of our students.”

Following the board’s 7-0 vote of support, school board president Leolga Wright offered a welcome.

“Thank you for your wiliness to serve,” Ms. Wright said.

Ms. Kline has filed with the Department of Elections as a candidate in the May 14 school board elections, and Ms. Hudson Briggs pledged to do so before the March 1 filing deadline.

District 1 winners in the May 14 election will serve out the current four-year terms, July 1 through June 30, 2025. District 1 terms on the ballot in the 2025 election will be the standard four years.
