Speak Up: Diabetes doesn’t affect only obese individuals

Ellen Richardson wrote a letter about her support of the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (“Stop diabetes before it begins, with antiobesity meds”).

• Ms. Ellen Richardson’s Opinion on stopping diabetes before it begins is way off base. Not everyone with diabetes is obese. So, that remedy would not solve the problem for some of us. How about we come up with a cure for the disease? Meantime, making sure people with diabetes get the medicine they need certainly should be a priority. Having stores sell products low in sugar and carbs would be great, too, considering there are far more diabetics than people who need gluten-free products. — Mike McClure
