The Wesley College men’s basketball team began its holiday season with a victory in the Kay Jewelers College Classic hosted by Randolph-Macon College, downing Bethany 85-73 on Monday evening in Virginia.

Anthony Bowers netted a career-high 31 points to lead four different Wolverines scoring in double figures. JW Lawson and Rasahn Brinkleyeach scored 14 while Jordan Johnson cashed in 12 points. Wayne Lennon led the team with 15 rebounds while Brinkley completed a double-double with 10 boards.

Wesley shot 33-for-69 (47.8%) from the floor while shooting 37.5 percent from behind the arc. The Wolverines held Bethany to just 25 made field goals on 35.2 percent shooting.

The Wolverines opened the game with a 17-5 run, jumping all over the Bison in the first five minutes of the game. Bethany responded with seven straight points to cut into the lead, but were held off by the Wolverines.

With 10:28 remaining, Lawson put the Wolverines up by double-digits again with a slashing layup. The squad continued to pile on as they kept a double-digit advantage throughout the rest of the half, taking a 44-29 lead into the break.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Bethany cut the lead to nine points with a 11-5 run, but Bowers quelled the Bison rush with a big three-pointer to put Wesley ahead by 12. The Wolverines were never truly threatened throughout the rest of the contest as they pulled away to earn their second consecutive win.

The Wolverines improve to 3-6 on the season and will take part in the championship game of the Kay Jewelers College Classic this evening at 7 p.m. Wesley will be facing the tournament hosts, Randolph-Macon College.

Boys basketball

Wicomico (Md.) 82, Caesar Rodney 66: The Riders fell at the Governors Challenge in Salisbury on Monday.

Davionne Robinson led CR with 17 points and eight rebounds while Jaquan Hooks added 14 points.

Kent County (Md.) 78, Polytech 58: Victor Crews paced the Panthers with 13 points in the defeat.

Girls basketball

Caesar Rodney 44, Howard 36: The Riders advanced in the Diamond State Classic.

Women’s basketball

Pollard with more MEAC honors: Forward NaJai Pollard continued her recent tea with a 13-point, 13-rebound and five-block performance in DSU’s convincing 88-63 home victory over Longwood last Tuesday, resulting in the freshman out of Richmond, Va., garnering her third straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week Award and Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time.

This feat for Pollard marks the fourth time she’s received MEAC Rookie of the Week recognition, making her the first Hornet to do it since guard Raven Bankston garnered the award five times during the 2013-14 season.  Pollard’s Defensive Player of the Week honor, meanwhile, is the first time a Hornet has done so since forward/center Nikkei Blackburn received the award last season.

Her performance against Longwood not only resulted in her team leading third double-double of the season, but her 13 boards and five blocks were both career highs.  Appearing in every game this season, which includes 10 starts, Pollard leads the Hornets in rebounds (6.8 rpg) and total blocks (14).  Scoring wise, she is third on the team in points per game (9.0) on 46 percent (40-of-88) shooting.
