After his first game as a member of the Wesley College men’s basketball team, Rasahn Brinkley earned Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors.

The Wolverines’ junior earned the awrad after scoring the game-winning basket with 1.9 seconds remaining in Wesley’s 92-91 win over second-ranked Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday. Brinkley finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, none more crucial than his putback in the closing seconds.

Brinkley and the Wolverines return to action on Friday when they take on Gwynedd-Mercy in the opening round of the Osprey Classic, hosted by Stockton University.

College volleyball

DSU’s Jackson honored: Delaware State senior outside hitter Jasmine Jackson was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week after totaling 52 kills, 30 digs and 16 aces in three matches last week.

The highlight of her week was a triple-double in the Hornets’ 3-2 win over Hampton on Friday. Jackson had 26 kills, a career-high 13 aces and 13 digs in the match.

The 13 aces and 39.5 points in the contest are tops in the MEAC this season.

Jackson played in 101 matches in four seasons with the Hornets. She finished her career as No. 3 on the Hornets’ all-time list with 992 kills.

Last week, she was named to the All-MEAC second team.

College bowling

Hornets shine in MEAC event: Delaware State topped all teams with a 7-1 mark in the first MEAC North Bowling competition of the season.

The Hornets swept four Baker matches on Sunday after winning three of four traditional games on Saturday. Delaware State topped 1,000 in total pinfall in three of four Baker contests.

Delaware State’s Elizabeth Burkholder was fourth in the weekend individual standings with a total pinfall of 807 in four games (201.8 avg.), with a high of 242.

DSU’s Chelsey Merklinger was fifth among all competitors with a four-game total pinfall of 791 (197.8 avg.)

Brianna Kauffman had the sixth-best weekend average of 196.7 (590 pinfall in three games), while Amber MacLeod was seventh at 196.0 (four game of 784).

High school swimming

Polytech to have team: Polytech High received approval from its school board last week to start up a boys’ and girls’ swimming program for the 2016-17 school year.

The addition of the Panthers will give the Henlopen Conference 11 teams in the sport next season.

Pop Warner

Dover-CR cheerleaders in nationals: The Dover CR Raiders Midget Cheerleaders recently turned in a strong performance at the Nov. 8 Eastern Regional Cheer and Dance Competition, earning the Pop Warner cheer team a bid in the Dec. 6-12 National Cheer and Dance Competition at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

As part of the only Pop Warner football and cheer program within the Capital and Caesar Rodney school districts, the Dover CR Midget Cheerleaders took first place in the Henlopen Pop Warner Cheer and Dance Competition in October.

That success enabled the cheerleading team to advance to the Eastern Regional Cheer and Dance Competition in Trenton, N.J. where they competed against five other teams from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

The Raiders’ impressive performance in the Eastern Regional earned the team a second-place finish, bested only by Old Bridge Cougars of Parlin, N.J.

Because the top two teams at that level move on to the national competition, both the Cougars and the Raiders will each represent the Eastern Region in the National Competition.

The team is led by head coach Carrie Apter, along with assistant coaches Jessica Vorous and Breanna Robinson.

The 14-member team is currently working to raise funds to cover the cost of the national championship for each cheerleader, coach and parent, which averages $1,000 per person. The girls raised funds in the summer by hosting tag days, working the NASCAR races while their parents worked Firefly and Big Barrel music festivals.
