The Wesley College baseball team began its Capital Athletic Conference schedule with an 11-3 victory over St. Mary’s on Wednesday afternoon.

Ron Morello finished with four RBI and three hits. Cody Simet earned his third win of the season, tossing six innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits for the Wolverines (7-4).

Andrew Weaver finished out the game with three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

Wesley jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first. The Wolverines strung together five hits, including a three-run triple from Morello.

Wesley added three more runs in the fifth as Mike Calvarese, Morello, and Joe Hummel each recorded an RBI.

College softball

Wesley 8, Waynesburg 0: The Wesley College softball team bounced back from a pair of losses on the first day of competition in The Spring Games to earn an 8-0 victory over Waynesburg College on Tuesday in Florida.

Nina Marcano went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI while Breanna Hartman went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and three stolen bases. Morgan Seymour went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Lily Engel (Polytech) and Destiny Davis combined for the shutout. Engel went four innings, allowing just four hits and striking out three before Davis pitched a pair of innings, allowing just three hits and no runs.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Delaware 14, Villanova 7: Junior Jamie Schwartz scored a career-high six goals while senior Casey Lyons handed out a career-best six assists in the Blue Hens’ win.

Delaware (6-1), which won its fourth consecutive game, also got two goals apiece from Kirsten Hale and Becky Gohsler, while four other Hens contributed a goal apiece. Lyons and Schwartz connected for four UD goals, including the Hens’ first three of the second half.

Blue Hen sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Carpentier made a season-high 12 saves.

MEN, Southern Virginia 13, Wesley 10: The Wolverines dropped to 2-3 with the loss.

Jack Redefer netted five goals with Sam Seibert adding three for Wesley, which trailed 10-9 going into the fourth quarter.

UD’s Romagnoli honored: Delaware redshirt freshman attackman Andrew Romagnoli was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Week for men’s lacrosse.

Romagnoli, a first-year transfer from Marquette, had six goals and an assist in the Blue Hens’ win over VMI.

College equestrian

Hornets nationally ranked: The Delaware State equestrian team’s victories over nationally-ranked Southern Methodist and South Carolina last weekend have propelled the Hornets into the national rankings for the first time in team history.

DSU holds down the 10th spot in the latest National Collegiate Equestrian Association team poll announced on Wednesday.

The Hornets have wins over three nationally-ranked opponents this season. In addition to the victories over SMU, then ranked seventh, and South Carolina (ninth), Delaware State posted a win over No. 8 New Mexico last November.

“This is a huge feat for our program, considering the caliber of teams in the poll,” said Delaware State coach Jen Ridgely.

College indoor track

Wesley’s Kimes honored: Wesley men’s and women’s indoor track and field coach Stephen Kimes was named Mideast Region Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

.In his fourth season at Wesley, Kimes led the Wolverines to a third-place finish in the Capital Athletic Conference Championships. Wesley is ranked in the national Top 20 for the first time in program history (now No. 8).

Kimes had 12 of his athletes qualify for the upcoming NCAA meet.

College athletics

D’Antonio to lead CAA: Joe D’Antonio has been selected as the second commissioner in the 31-year history of the Colonial Athletic Association.

D’Antonio comes to the CAA from the Big East Conference, where he serves as the Senior Associate Commissioner for Administration and NCAA Relations. He spent more than a decade at the Big East and eight years at Providence College, while also earning appointments to some of the NCAA’s most prestigious committees.

Delaware is a member of the CAA.

D’Antonio will take over as commissioner of the CAA on July 1. He replaces Tom Yeager, who has served as the only commissioner in the 31-year history of the conference. Yeager will continue to serve in a consulting role over the next year.
