Smyrna High earned an overtime victory, 46-44, over Sussex Tech in a girls’ basketball Henlopen Conference Northern Division contest on Tuesday night.

Jayla Smith and Melena Credle paced the Eagles with 17 and 15 points respectively.

Rukiya Davis scored 13 points to lead Sussex Tech.

Dover 43, Sussex Central 38: Xzaviera Robinson had 12 points and Ashley Manifold scored 11 for the Senators who won their second straight Henlopen North game to open the season.

Caesar Rodney 52, Hodgson 41: Jordan Moseley’s 24 points helped the Riders record the nonconference victory.

Cape Henlopen 59, Polytech 48: The Vikings began their season with a Henlopen North win.

The Panthers were led by Tamia Mathias who scored 22 points.

Boys’ basketball

Cape Henlopen 58, Polytech 48: Randy Rickards netted a game-high 24 points in the Vikings’ Henlopen North victory.

Dover 77, Sussex Central 37: The Senators picked up their first win of the year on the road in Henlopen North action.

Milford 62, Delmar 40: Henry Nesmith led all scorers with 27 points in the Henlopen South battle.

Brion Murray added 10 points for the Buccaneers.

Smyrna 88, Sussex Tech 64: The Eagles opened Henlopen North play with a road win Tuesday.

Laurel 63, Lake Forest 53: Eric Pilot led Bulldogs with 19 points for a Henlopen South win.

College football

Callahan a finalist for Gagliardi: For the second straight season, Wesley College quarterback Joe Callahan has been selected as a finalist for the coveted Gagliardi Trophy, given to the most outstanding football player in NCAA Division III.

Callahan is among the final four honorees in contention to earn the Gagliardi Trophy.

A 2014 Gagliardi Trophy finalist and a 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-America first-team honoree, Callahan directed the Wolverines to the NCAA quarterfinals and ended the regular season as the Division III leader in five statistical categories: passing efficiency (196.0), passing touchdowns (43), passing yards (3,809), points responsible for per game (29.6) and total offense (410.6 ypg.).

In the postseason, Callahan became the only NCAA Division III quarterback to ever throw for 5,000 yards in a season. His 55 touchdown passes this year were the second-most in NCAA Division III history.

Nine Wolverines honored: The Wesley College football team placed nine players on the D3football.com All-East Region team. Quarterback Joe Callahan was named D3football.com All-East Region Offensive Player of the Year.

Joining Callahan on the first-team Offense were receivers James Okike and Bryce Shade and offensive linemen Matthew Gono and Matthew Schmidt. Wesley center Austin Eagle and tight end Kyle George were chosen to the All-East second-team offense.

Linebacker Samer Manna earned All-East second-team defense honors, while defensive back Andre Connally was selected to the All-East third-team.

College swimming

Milford’s Sanders honored: Delaware women’s swimming standout Alyssa Sanders, a Milford High grad, has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Swimmer of the Week.

Sanders, a team co-captain and cognitive science major from Dover, was honored for her performance this past week at the U.S. Swimming AT&T Winter Nationals in Federal Way, Wash. She was one of five Blue Hens who competed at the meet, which included some of the fastest swimmers in the world, including numerous Olympic hopefuls and world record-holders.

Sanders, the UD all-time record-holder in the 50, 100, and 200 backstroke events, swam to a time of 1:04.76 in the 100 backstroke to place 56th overall and fifth in her heat. Her time was just one second off the Olympic Trials qualifying time.
