Jordan Allen netted 23 points and Dover High made some clutch free throws down the stretch as the Senators posted a 56-49 victory over Newark in nonconference boys’ basketball on Thursday night.

Dover (10-7) has won four games in a row, giving it two more victories than the eight it had last season. The Senators were 9-of-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, including 6-of-6 shooting from junior Michael Douglas (9 points).

Thomas Hoskins added 12 points while Terrence Woodlin had 10 points and several key blocks. Allen sank four three-pointers.

Seaford 84, Delmar 76: The Blue Jays earned their third win in the last five games to improve to 5-12.

R.J. Smith (20 points, 11 rebounds), Kadeem Hughes (20 points), Jaquan Darling (19 points) and Andrez Jones (12 points, 6 assists) all scored in double figures for Seaford.

Larry Ennis tallied a game-high 29 points for Delmar.

Girls’ basketball

Dover 46, Mt. Pleasant 39: After having their 11-game winning streak snapped by Caesar Rodney on Wednesday night, the Senators (13-4) bounced back with a win over the Green Knights (13-5) on Thursday afternoon.

Senior guard Alexis Heath netted a team-high 17 points in the nonconference victory.

Sussex Central 55, St. Mark’s 38: The Golden Knights used a 21-0 run midway through the contest to overcome an early one-point deficit.

Taylor Pritchett tallied 24 points with Jasmine Hudson adding 19 for Central (14-3), which has a four-game winning streak. Hudson hit two straight three-pointers to finish off the Knights’ 21-point run.

Delmar 36, Seaford 34: The Wildcats picked up the Henlopen South victory as Carly Covington had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Wrestling

Sussex Central 40, Caesar Rodney 25: The Golden Knights downed the Riders in a Henlopen Conference Northern Division matchup on Thursday.

Smyrna 65, William Penn 3: The Eagles (11-1) collected seven pins in their nonconference victory on Thursday night.

Anthony Wuest (182) won in 1:23 for the fastest fall of the evening. Kalen Wilson (152) and Elijah Hutchinson (160) also posted first-period pins for Smyrna.

Also winning by fall for the Eagles were Gregory Baum (106), Cole Sebastianelli (126), Ronnie Wuest (170) and Marquelle Bennett (195).

Cape Henlopen 46, St. Mark’s 31: Darnell Bailey (113) and Maxwell Norquest (120) started the match with back-to-back pins as the Vikings rolled to the nonconference win.

Also winning by pin for Cape were Vincent Diego (138), Ja’von Currie (160), Cory Lawson (170), Joel Torres (182) and Emerson Fajardo (106). Torres’ fall was the quickest at 1:02.

College baseball

Hornets open season today: Delaware State’s baseball team opens its season today with the start of a four-game series against Presbyterian in South Carolina.

Today’s contest is alted for 11 a.m. followed by a a doubleheader on Saturday (11 a.m.) and a single game on , Sunday (1 p.m.)

Delaware State returns just nine letter winners from its 2014 squad, six everyday players and three pitchers. No returning DSU pitcher had more than two wins last season.

Despite the heavy losses from the 2014 squad, the Hornets are preseason favorites to win their fourth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division title. DSU  received 13 of 18 first-place votes and 66 total points in the Northern Division poll.

Delaware State was 30-17 overall, 17-7 in the MEAC North last spring. The Hornets have a combined record of 60-12 in Northern Division games the last three seasons.

Shortstop David Kimbrough (Sr.), along with outfielders Charles Dailey (r-Sr.) and Ron Farley (So.) were selected to the preseason All-MEAC first-team; while infielder Cameron Onderko (Jr.) has been a consistent hitter in his two years on the squad.

Right handers Zach Candeloro (Sr., Caesar Rodney) and Bobby Brown (Sr., Dover) are this year’s most experienced pitchers, although they combined for just seven starts last season.

College lacrosse

Former Wesley player passes away: Eric Potts, a former Wesley College lacrosse player who was paralyzed in a summer-league game in 1998, died last Sunday at the age of 38.

A William Penn High grad, Potts was a member of Wesley’s 1996 Eastern College Athletic Conference championship team, winning the squad’s ‘Charlie Hustle’ award. His 1998 injury left him a quadriplegic, without the use of his legs or hands.

In the last several years, the Wolverines lacrosse team has awarded Potts’ No. 5 jersey to the player who best resembles Potts’ attitude and work ethic.

A visitation will be held today from 5-7 p.m. in the Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19702 followed by a memorial service celebrating Potts’ life at 7 p.m.
