MILFORD — Overcoming a slow start, the Milford High girls’ basketball team finally got coach Leona White her first state tournament win.

Eventually the 14th-seeded Buccaneers pulled away to a 66-29 victory over No. 19 Delmarva Christian in the first round of the DIAA state tourney on Tuesday night.

The win advanced Milford (15-6) to Thursday’s second-round game at No. 3 Sanford. Delmarva Christian finished the season 13-8.

Trailing 6-3 midway through the opening quarter, the Buccaneers finished the period on a 9-2 run and never stopped.

Junior Jameshia Baker scored all but two of her game-high 27 points in the second half to help Milford pull away, but it was seniors Kala Fluitt (16 points) and Jonae Boone (12) that helped the Bucs erase the early deficit and go into halftime with a 27-14 advantage.

Boone knocked down a pair of first quarter three-pointers, the second of which came during the 9-2 run, and Fluitt kept fighting in the post and getting to the free-throw line. The duo combined for 19 of Milford’s 27 points in the half.

“I think it was nerves, plus it was senior night, and then it was the tournament,” White said about her team’s slow start.

Milford was celebrating its senior night during the tournament because Seaford forfeited what would’ve been the Bucs’ final regular-season home game.

“The first half Kala was struggling with the traveling, but once she and Jonae pulled the girls together we had a positive outcome,” added White, who is in her fourth season as Milford’s coach. “Then we had Baker step up.”

Sussex Central 39, Cape Henlopen 34: Lamesha Walker tallied 12 points as the ninth-seeded Golden Knights held off the No. 24 Vikings in a first-round tourney game.

Central (17-5) takes a 10-game winning streak into Thursday’s second-round game at No. 8 Hodgson (16-5). The contest starts at 7 p.m.

The Knights held a 27-21 lead going into the fourth quarter against Cape (9-12). It was Central’s third win over their Henlopen North rivals this season.

Sophomore Logan Shuttleworth had a team-high 11 points for the Vikings.

Woodbridge 43, A.I. duPont 33: The 11th-seeded Raiders grabbed a seven-point first-quarter lead in downing the No. 22 Tigers.

Woodbridge (15-7) advances to play at sixth-seeded Caravel (14-6) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Yaz Hill netted 17 points, with four three-pointers for the Raiders Altia Anderson collected 13 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists. Mykle Crippen added 10 points off the bench.

College baseball

Delaware 12, Maryland 7: The Blue Hens pounded out 16 hits and scored in all but two innings in posting the nonconference win.

Kevin Mohollen went 4-for-5 with four runs scored, a triple and a home run to lead the offensive explosion, while Jordan Glover finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI.

Diaz Nardo (Cape Henlopen) added two hits including a two-run homer, while Nick Patten and Brian Mayer also contributed a pair of hits for Delaware (4-3).

MEN, Delaware 14, VMI 6: Redshirt freshman Andrew Romagnoli exploded for six goals, including four in a seven-goal first quarter, to lead the Blue Hens (1-4) to their first win.

Romagnoli, a first-year transfer from Marquette, had scored just one goal in the Hens’ first four games. But he scored three times in a span of just four minutes at the end of the first quarter to stake the Hens to a quick 7-2 lead.

Delaware never looked back from there as the Hens outshot VMI by a 43-17 margin, held a 44-24 advantage in groundballs, won 15 of 24 faceoffs, and forced 24 turnovers.

Wolverines’ Clough wins award: After helping the Wesley College women’s lacrosse team to a 15-11 victory over Randolph, goalkeeper Savannah Clough was named the Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

The sophomore made 18 saves and also recorded a caused turnover and three ground balls.

Hens’ Carpentier honored: Delaware sophomore Taylor Carpentier collected her first CAA Defensive Player of the Week Award.

The goalie led the Blue Hens (4-1) to a 2-0 week by posting a total of 14 saves, six groundballs and three caused turnovers.
