Lake Forest High scored six runs in the second inning and three more in the third en route to a 13-2 victory over the Delaware Academy of Public Safety & Security in nonconference baseball on Monday.

The Spartans ended the regular season with back-to-back wins to finish 10-8.

Jordan Simpson and Chris Sipple had three hits apiece as Lake finished with 14 hits in the contest. Winning pitcher Tyler Collins struck out six and Tyler Cauthren, Collins and Logan Simpson all had multiple RBI.

Softball

Caravel 9, Sussex Central 3: The Buccaneers scored five runs in the top of the first inning to take control early.

Winning pitcher Holly Brooks threw a two-hitter.

Taylor Evick had a hit a two RBI for the Golden Knights.

Lake Forest 10, Del. Academy of Public Safety & Security 0: The Spartans finished the regular season with a victory as they improved to 12-6.

College track & field

Several Wolverines qualify for NCAAs: Wesley College’s men’s track & field relay teams and four individuals have qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 21-23 in Canton, N.Y.

The 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams are both seeded seventh going into the national championships with times of 41.12 and 3:13.48, respectively. Sophomore Patrick Schlosser plays a key role in both relays while classmates DaJahn Lowery and Greg Taylor (Sussex Central), as well as senior Matt Bundy round out the 400.

Accompanying Schlosser in the 1,600 relay is likely to be classmate Dominic McAnulty, as well as Bundy and freshman Urgy Eado.

Schlosser, Lowery, Bundy and junior De’Vaughn Trader (Delmar) also will compete for championships in individual events, which is the most individual qualifiers the Wolverines have ever had in program history.

Schlosser is seeded ninth in the decathlon after winning the ECAC Championship in the event in record fashion. Lowery will compete in the 100-meter dash after setting a school-record with a 10.68 at the Salisbury Final Qualifier last Friday.

Bundy has qualified once again in the 110-meter hurdles and Trader, another school-record holder, will participate in the long jump.

Potential athletes that could run in the relays are Anthony Brinkley and Roland Attoh-Okine.

Hornets compete in ECACs: With the season nearing its end, the Delaware State track & field program wrapped up the IC4A/ECAC Championships this past weekend at Princeton.

On the men’s side, the Hornets finished 30th with 10 points, led by Charles Wulff-Cochrane crossing the finish line in 51.49 to place second in the 400-meter hurdles. Jonathon Jones registered a seventh-place finish (47.92) in the final round of the 400-meter dash.

The DSU women placed 44th with four points, highlighted by Omealla Gordon finishing fifth (54.04) in the 400-meter dash. Morgan Durham, who took home the bronze medal during the MEAC Outdoor Championships in the javelin with a personal-best mark of 121-09 (37.12m), placed 25th (116-02 – 35.41m) to conclude her season.

Wulff-Cochrane will head to Jacksonville, Fla. for the NCAA preliminary round later this month.

College athletics

UD names its top athletes: Men’s soccer sophomore All-American Guillermo Delgado and women’s lacrosse four-time all-conference midfielder Caitlin McCartney were named the University of Delaware’s Alumni Association Outstanding Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

In addition, women’s soccer standout Allegra Gray was named the winner of the Mary Ann Hitchens Award and baseball all-star centerfielder Joe Giacchino was the recipient of the Edgar Johnson Award as the university held its year-end award ceremony.
