Savannah State netted 16 of the game’s first 18 points and never looked back, downing Delaware State 64-47 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball on Monday night.

The loss kept the Hornets (0-3 MEAC, 1-16 overall) winless in conference. The Tigers are 3-2, 7-9.

After jumping out to its 16-2 advantage, Savannah State took a 29-16 lead by halftime. Three Tigers scored in double figures led by Christopher Martin (16 points), who hit 4-of-7 three-pointers.

Devin Morgan had a team-high 15 points for DelState with DeAndre Haywood adding 12. Morgan was named the MEAC’s Rookie of the Week for the second straight week on Monday.

Morgan is tops on the Hornets and 24th in the MEAC in scoring at 10.8 points per game.

Savannah State eventually led by as many as 24 points at 56-32 in the second half.

WOMEN, Delaware State 67, Savannah State 59: Mikah Aldridge scored 25 points and Amber Bogard added 21 as the Hornets held off the Tigers for a MEAC win on Monday night.

The Hornets (2-2 MEAC, 5-12 overall) jumped out to a 24-9 lead after the first quarter before downing Savannah State (2-3, 5-11).

Aldridge and Bogard were a combined 17-of-28 from the floor. The Hornets shot 66.7 percent (18-for-27) from the floor, including 71.4 percent (5-for-7) percent from the three-point line in the first half.

NaJai Pollard led DelState with seven rebounds and added 10 points.

DSU’s Pollard honored again: Delaware State forward NaJai Pollard received her sixth Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week Award in women’s basketball.

This time her week was highlighted by collecting a career-high 20 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, two steals and one assist is DSU’s dramatic 77-76 over Howard last Monday.

Winning the league’s rookie award for a sixth time surpasses Hornet guard Raven Bankston’s feat of receiving the award five times during the 2013-14 season.

Pollard leads the Hornets in rebounds (7.2 rpg), double-doubles (3) and blocks (21), while sitting third in scoring (10.1 ppg) and steals (17).

Hens’ Enabosi takes CAA award: Delaware forward Nicole Enabosi collected her third Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week honor.

Enabosi averaged a double-double of 10.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in two victories for the Blue Hens (9-7, 4-1 CAA) this past week.

She began the week with eight points and 12 rebounds in Delaware’s 63-47 win at the College of Charleston Friday. On Sunday, Enabosi was clutch against Towson, sending the game into overtime with a lay-in before forcing a Tigers turnover with one second remaining.

She finished with 13 points and eight boards as the Hens defeated Towson, 69-64, in OT.

Enabosi leads the Hens with 7.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks per while registering 8.9 points in 26.6 minutes per contest.

College lacrosse

UD puts two on all-CAA squad: Delaware junior midfielder Jackson Finigan and sophomore defender Connor Lalley have been selected to the Colonial Athletic Association men’s lacrosse preseason all-conference team, the league office announced Monday.

Finigan and Lalley were among 18 players honored in a vote of the league coaches.

The league coaches also selected their predicted order of finish with Towson leading the way with 25 points and five first place votes in six-team field. Hofstra was picked second and had one first place vote followed by Fairfield, Drexel, Massachusetts, and Delaware.

Finigan, a two-year standout at midfield, will serve as team co-captain this spring for the Blue Hens. He started all 15 gameslast season and contributed 15 goals, 11 assists, a team-high 44 groundballs, and six caused turnovers.

Lalley, one of the league’s top young defenders, played in 14 games with 12 starts and contributed five groundballs and six caused turnovers and dished out an assist. He also earned a spot on the CAA All-Rookie team.
