Delmar won a wild five-set volleyball match 3-2 over Appoquinimink on Thursday evening in the first round of the DIAA volleyball state tournament.

It’s the first ever victory in the volleyball tournament for the Wildcats. They join Smyrna and Caesar Rodney as Henlopen Conference teams to have won in the tournament, though they are the first to do it from the Henlopen Southern Division.

Delmar (11-5), who is seeded 16th, will face top-seed Delaware Military Academy, who had a first round bye, on Saturday night at McKean High (6 p.m.).

Conrad 3, Cape Henlopen 0: No. 24 seed Conrad upset the ninth-seeded Vikings on Thursday night 25-22, 25-22 and 25-23.

Sanford 3, Delmarva Christian 0: The No. 14 seeded Royals fell 25-17, 25-22 and 25-15 to the 19th seed.

Boys’ soccer

Caravel 6, Dover 2: James Stock netted both of Dover’s goals in its season finale. Jordan Hutchins provided an assist.

College football

Pair of Hens honored by CoSIDA: In the quest to prepare student-athletes to be outstanding contributors on the playing field, in the classroom, and in the community, few excel like University of Delaware football standout juniors Jalen Randolph and Ryan Torzsa.

And so it’s only fitting that both have been selected to the Capital One College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District 2 Division I Football All-Academic first team announced Thursday afternoon. For Randolph, it was the second straight year that he has been honored.

To be eligible, student-athletes must have a 3.3 or better cumulative grade point average, be a starter or key reserve, and have at least sophomore eligibility. District 2 includes all NCAA Division I FCS and FBS schools in the states of Kentucky, West Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.

All first selections are now eligible for the national Academic All-American ballot. The teams are selected from a vote of sports information directors.

Delaware, which joined Kentucky, Navy, Robert Morris, Villanova, Penn State, and St. Francis (Pa.) as the only schools to place more than one student-athlete on the team, has now had 35 student-athletes earn all-district honors since 1970 and the Blue Hens have had at least one player on the all-district team 16 times in the last 18 seasons.

“We are thrilled for Jalen and Ryan to receive these awards,” said Delaware head coach Dave Brock. “What an honor it is for them to be rewarded for their commitment to academic excellence but also for the great job they do on the field. Both are vital players and starters who have done a lot for our program on and off the field. It’s an honor for our football program to see them recognized.

College field hockey

Seven Hens earn CAA awards: On the eve of the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Field Hockey Championships, the University of Delaware had seven players receive All-CAA accolades, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Headlining the individual honors were senior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) and junior Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos), who were each named to the All-CAA First Team for the third straight year.

Patzner currently leads Delaware with 28 points on 10 goals and eight assists. The midfielder finishes her illustrious career by receiving All-CAA recognition in each of her four seasons in a Blue Hens uniform.

Peet is second for UD with 26 points on a team-high 11 goals and four assists.

Allie Mikelson (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) also experience a three-peat as the senior was tabbed to the All-CAA Second Team for the third consecutive season. Mikelson has registered 10 points with eight assists while ranking ninth nationally with five defensive saves.

A 2014 All-Rookie Team honoree, Taylor Lister (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) earned All-CAA Second Team during her sophomore campaign. The midfielder has posted 14 points on six goals and two assists with three game-winning scores.

The Blue Hens had two selections on this season’s All-Rookie Team in freshmen Lisa Giezeman (Leidschendam, The Netherlands/Sin-Maartenscollege) and Greta Nauck (Krefeld, Germany/Gymnasium am Moltekplatz).

Giezeman has also tallied 10 goals (three game-winning) and added three assists for 23 points in 19 games played.

Nauck is third for Delaware with 25 points on 10 goals and five assists.

Rounding out the honors for the Blue Hens is senior Maddie O’Beirne (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall), who earned All-Academic Team accolades. An environmental studies major, O’Beirne is a two-time NFHCA National Academic Squad honoree and National College Athlete Honors Society selection.

James Madison swept the conference’s major postseason awards as Taylor West was chosen as the Player of the Year and was recognized alongside Loes Stijntjes (Defensive Player of the Year), Melissa Wilken (Rookie of the Year) and Christy Morgan (Coach of the Year).
