Delaware men’s lacrosse coach Bob Shillinglaw notched the 300th victory of his career on Tuesday as the Blue Hens rallied to edge Manhattan, 6-5.

Delaware (2-5) fought back from a 5-4 deficit with under seven minutes left, getting clutch goals from Joe Eisele and Anthony Disanzo in the final 3:21 to post the non-league win over host Manhattan (0-6),

Shillinglaw, now in his 38th season at the helm of the Hens, joined former Massachusetts coach Dick Garber as the only coaches in NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse history to win 300 games at one school. Shillinglaw, in his 41st season overall as a head coach, also picked up win No. 324 all-time.

“This win means so much just for the players,” said Shillinglaw. “Our guys have been putting in a lot of effort and have battled all year. We’ve had some down times for sure this season. But I couldn’t be more pleased for them. They did it in exciting fashion down to the end today.

“This is a great group of guys,” continued Shillinglaw. “I’ve enjoyed coaching here at Delaware immensely. I wouldn’t want to coach anywhere else in the country.”

Eisele, a freshman, notched his first career hat trick. including a score from Disanzo with 3:21 left that tied the game for the fifth time.

Disanzo then scored the game-winner with 2:16 left as he took a feed from co-captain Steve DeLargy. DeLargy finished with three assists.

Delaware held a 31-18 advantage in shots and won eight of 15 faceoffs. The Hens also forced 18 turnovers.

College baseball

Delaware 10, Maryland 8: Five Blue Hens hit home runs before Delaware held off a late Maryland rally at Harford Community College.

Delaware (7-4), which won for the fourth time in five games, knocked off the Terrapins (5-6) for the second time in eight days. Jordan Glover finished 2-for-3 with a double, homer and two RBI for the Hens, while Doug Trimble was 2-for-5 with a triple, homer and two RBI.

Nick Liggett, Calvin Scott and Brian Mayer also went deep as Delaware reached double figures for the third time this season. Blue Hen reliever Matt Hornich, who tossed 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, earned his first victory of the season.

Villanova 2, Delaware State 1: The Hornets allowed just five hits and one earned run, but Villanova’s pitchers were a little better in the Wildcats’ victory.

Wildcat starter Jonathan Rosero (2-0) tossed six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three to earn the win. Three Wildcat relievers held the Hornets (0-12) to two hits and one run.

Delaware State starter Jaylen Zielecki (0-1) was the tough-luck loser after allowing an unearned run without a hit in the bottom of the first inning. That was the only run Zielecki gave up in four innings.

The only hit Villanova had off the Hornet starter was a third-inning single.

Villanova added a run in the fifth off DSU reliever Garrett Coverdale to open up a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh, DSU’s Rich Rountree hit a single through the hole in right to score Jacob Bartlett and trim Villanova’s lead to 2-1. DSU had runners on second and third later in the inning, but failed to get another run across.

Hens’ Mohollen honored: Delaware freshman outfielder Kevin Mohollen was named the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Co-Rookie of the Week.

Mohollen batted .467 (7-for-15) with a double, triple, homer and seven runs scored as the Blue Hens won three of four games during the week. Mohollen, who has batted leadoff and started in centerfield during all 10 games on the season, leads the Hens with 16 hits, 11 runs scored, two triples and three stolen bases.

College basketball

Four UD women’s players honored: The Delaware women’s basketball team had four players recognized on the all-Colonial Athletic Association teams.

Senior Courtni Green collected All-CAA second-team honors for the first time in her career while junior Erika Brown was named to the third team and freshman Nicole Enabosi earned All-Rookie team accolades. Junior Hannah Jardine was tabbed an All-Academic team selection for the second straight year.

Delaware opens the CAA tournament on Thursday with a 2:30 p.m. matchup against Elon at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.

College softball

UD’s Steinmetz earns award: Delaware freshman Anna Steinmetz was named the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Rookie of the Week.

Steinmetz, who split time at first base and behind the plate during UD’s four games at the Blue Hen Blast Tournament over the weekend, batted .385 (5-for-13) with three RBI, two runs scored and a double.

College track & field

Wesley sending 12 to NCAAs: Twelve members of the Wesley College men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to Grinnell, Iowa this weekend to compete in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

Two Wolverine relay teams have qualified for the national event as well as four individual competitors. Coach Stephen Kimes was thrilled with his teams’ performance so far this season and looks forward to the event.

“Our main goal is to get everyone through their preliminaries with a top-eight finish and into the finals,” he said. “We hope to get into the finals and get to the podium as many times as possible. It would be great for these student-athletes to get All-American honors and even possibly grab a national championship.”
