FELTON — Lake Forest linebacker Cam Lewis wasn’t going to let it happen two weeks in row.

So with his Spartans holding a one-point lead late in a nonconference game against visiting St. Mark’s Friday night, he took matters into his own hands and helped Lake preserve a 14-13 victory.

Trailing by one, starting at his own 34 with 2:30 left on the clock and no timeouts, St. Mark’s junior quarterback William Sullivan fired two incomplete passes, the second of which was nearly intercepted. Sullivan wouldn’t get a chance to throw again, because on both third and fourth down Lewis came free off the right edge and sacked him, leading to a turnover on downs and essentially ending the game.

“It was open, I just had to make the tackle,” said Lewis, whose Spartans blew a second half lead in last week’s loss to Hodgson. “We were real pumped up after last week. Our game plan changed up a little bit, because we wanted to keep getting pressure on the quarterback.”

About the only time Sullivan wasn’t under duress, he managed to hit Jamai Rice on a wide receiver screen that the senior took 52 yards to the end zone while spinning away from three tackles. Coupled with the point after, the play gave St. Mark’s a 13-0 lead with 4:40 remaining in the half.

Sensing his team needed a boost, senior Ben Moore came through with one in the form of an 81-yard touchdown return on the ensuing kickoff. It was his first of two big plays, the second being a 37-yard touchdown run on a counter with 9:26 left in the fourth quarter that led to the winning score.

“We have a few exciting players and Ben is one of them,” Lake coach Fred Johnson said. “Our goal was to try to get him the ball, and that was awesome when he broke that (kickoff return) touchdown. It brought a lot of life into the kids.”

For Moore, both plays simply boiled down to finding the hole and running through.

“On the right side I saw a hole out of the corner of my eye,” Moore said of the kickoff return that allowed Lake to enter halftime trailing just 13-7. “(On the touchdown run) I saw the defense was shifting so I just made a move and turned it up the field. That’s all I did.

“This was a dogfight and a good win,” he added. “But we’re going to stay humble and work hard for Dover next week.”
