Milford High built a 21-point halftime lead before holding on for a 56-48 victory over Lake Forest in Henlopen Conference Southern Division girls’ basketball on Friday night.

Jameisha Baker netted a game-high 20 points, including four three-pointers, to pace the Buccaneers, who were up 39-18 at intermission. Xitlali Roman (13 points) and Kala Fluitt (11) also scored in double figures for Milford.

Maya Maddox (17) and Shayna Gourdine (15) led Lake Forest.

Caesar Rodney 65, Smyrna 40: Simone London’s 21 points led the Riders to the Henlopen North victory.

Destiny Johnson added 11 points as CR (15-3) won its seventh game in a row. The Riders outscored the Eagles 17-6 in the first quarter.

Melena Credle had 17 points for Smyrna with Julyanet Mojica adding 11.

Cape Henlopen 42, Sussex Tech 32: The Vikings opened up a 25-11 halftime lead en route to the victory.

Alison Palmer had a team-high 10 points while Sydney Pederson added nine for Cape.

Erykah Tolliver (11 points) and Rukiya Davis (10) paced Sussex Tech.

Sussex Central 69, Polytech 31: Emily Truitt and Taylor Pritchett tallied 19 points apiece as the Golden Knights stayed unbeaten in the Henlopen North.

Jada Smack added 10 points for Central, which led 39-11 at halftime. Truitt and Pritchett combined to hit five three-pointers.

Fatima Edwards had a team-high 14 points for the Panthers.

Indian River 51, Seaford 32: The Indians earned a Henlopen Conference Sout victory.

Boys’ basketball

Polytech 54, Sussex Central 36: The Panthers had to overcome a five-point halftime deficit to stay unbeaten in the Henlopen North.

With the contest tied, Polytech outscored the Golden Knights, 19-6, in the fourth quarter. The Panthers’ John Pierce, III (14 points), Richard Hicks (12) and Juwan Gray (10) all scored in double figures.

Amontay Clanton netted 22 points, hitting four three-pointers, to pace Central.

Milford 69, Lake Forest 64, OT: The Buccaneers overcame a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit before winning the Henlopen South game in overtime.

Milford outscored the Spartans 22-9 in the fourth period and then 7-2 in OT. The Bucs’ Kevin Cannon (14 points), Damon Coleman (12) and Devin Kravitz (12) all finished in double figures.

Aaron Ingram (15) and Dominique Griffith (14) paced the Spartans.

Cape Henlopen 79, Sussex Tech 75: Ryan Thornburg scored 28 points as the Vikings picked up the Henlopen North victory.

Demetrius Price (13 points), Ian Robertson (12) and Drew Mulcahy (11) also led the way for Cape.

The Ravens’ Shi’wuan Sykes and Aubre Allen had 21 points apiece.

Woodbridge 61, Laurel 55: Randy DuPont tallied 25 points with three three-pointers as the Raiders topped the Bulldogs in a South matchup.

Ja’mi Ross added 10 points for Woodbridge, which outscored Laurel 24-21 in the fourth quarter.

Laurel’s Gary Warren netted 17 points with Chucky Auguste scoring 14.

Sanford 52, Indian River 24: The Warriors posted four pins in the noconference victory.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 61, William & Mary 56: The Blue Hens battled back from a 10-point, first-half deficit to win their fifth straight in a Colonial Athletic Association contest.

Delaware (8-5 CAA, 13-11 overall) avenged a Jan. 18th loss to the Tribe in which W&M nearly tripled UD’s second-half points en route to a 59-48 comeback victory.

William & Mary (5-8, 11-13) missed a pair of three-pointers in the closing minute before the Hens sank a pair of foul shots to ice the win.

“This is a huge win,” said Delaware coach  Tina Martin. “I knew it was going to be a nail-biter as William & Mary has been playing very well and their shooters have come to life. ... I think we’ve really grown up in the past few weeks.  We’ve won five straight and that certainly wouldn’t have happened in the beginning of the year.  Kids have stepped up and come to play.”

Sophomore Erika Brown scored 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field. Junior Courtni Green added 10 points while sophomore Hannah Jardine and freshman Makeda Nicholas each posted nine points apiece. Nicholas collected a game-best 12 rebounds.

Senior Stephanie Leon tied career highs with nine rebounds and five blocked shots.

College baseball

Hens split in openers: Delaware defeated Georgetown 3-0, but fell to Wake Forest 3-2 in a season-opening doubleheader on Friday.

Against the Hoyas, senior Zach Lopes led off the ninth inning with a solo home run. After Ty Warrington and Diaz Nardo (Cape Henlopen) got on base, Jeremy Ake delivered a two-run double to give Delaware some insurance runs.

In the nightcap, the Hens trailed 3-0 before scoring twice in the ninth. Delaware left the tying run on third base when Nick Liggett’s towering drive was caught at the warning track.

Freshman reliever Nick Spadafino (Dover) set Wake Forest down in order in the eighth.

Presbyterian 13, Delaware State 6: The Hornets gave up four runs in the first inning and never recovered in losing their season opener on Friday.

Justin Allen’s RBI triple was the only extra base hit of seven hits in the game for the Hornets. DSU freshmen relievers Tommy Spagnolo and Hunter McVey combined for 2.2 shutout innings.

College softball

DelState splits twinbill: Delaware State (1-6) began the first day of the Eagle Challenge with its first win of 2015, earning a 16-8 five-inning victory over host North Carolina Central on Friday. But the Hornets dropped the nightcap, 14-1, in five innings to Virgina (3-4).

Against NCCU, the Hornets found themselves down six after a mistake-filled first inning. But they responded with catcher Sandy Hawthorne and infielder Jordan Stamps driving in two runs each with an RBI-double and a home run.

Two innings later, after Delaware State scored on an NCCU error in the second, the Hornets scored five runs on three hits and three Eagle errors to go up 10-6, sparked by a Nicole Gazzola RBI-double left center to bring in Rochelle Sablay.

Against Gazzola went 3-for-3 and a run scored, while Vanessa Washington was 2-for-3.

UD goes 1-1: Delaware defeated Toledo, 8-0 in five innings, before falling to the host Buccaneers 6-2 as the Blue Hens opened their season Friday afternoon at the Charleston Southern Tournament.

Sophomore Carolyn Szymanski fired a two-hit shutout and blasted a three-run homer in the opening victory over the Rockets (2-5). Szymanski allowed just two singles while tossing the fourth shutout of her career, and hit her fifth career homer in the bottom of the third inning.

Jessica Grisler opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff home run, while Mariah Kondravy doubled home Giovanna Kolofer later in the frame to put the Blue Hens up a pair.
