Is a proposal to rename the Delaware Bay overreach?

Posted

Late last month, a state lawmaker in southern New Jersey proposed a bill to change the name of the Delaware Bay to the Bay of New Jersey. While Delaware officials have yet to comment on the idea, it comes about six months after President Donald Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. What are your thoughts on new monikers for geographic places? Will this cause confusion in the history books or is it a necessary move?

  • As someone from South Jersey, I’m not surprised a politician from there is trying this. — Nicholas Joseph
  • Delaware has lost its identity to Washington, D.C., and New Jersey, so why not? — Christopher Dale Brinson
  • What state controls the majority of the bay, and what state is getting regulated to death over the bay? Then, you can fight over if they can rename it. Until then, it’s hot air. — Jeff Grzeszczak
  • Forgive me, but I do not know the history or geography of this. Is the Delaware Bay called this because it is in Delaware or does it reside in New Jersey? Or does it connect both states? I always thought it was part of Delaware, so I guess it should stay as it is. There are more important things to do in Delaware than renaming places, and probably same goes for New Jersey. — Tiffany Rumbley
  • It is a stupid political stunt that I hope sheds light on how stupid the other “renaming” was. — Larry Josefowski
  • Yes, overreach. — Sherry Buckingham Peck
  • Keep it the way it is. — Maureen Elizabeth Fagan
  • Let’s call it the Gulf of Mexico. — Peter Giaquinto
  • I’m only certain that it sure seems like a stupid waste of time and probably money. And who cares? — Kevin Keen
  • This is why we need term limits. — Bob Hice
  • Donald Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America because Mexico is part of North America, along with Canada. New Jersey can’t just decide to change the name of the Delaware Bay to the Bay of New Jersey, since it flows from the Delaware River, and New Jersey doesn’t actually get much of the bay at all. — Kyle Hendrix
  • Democrats continue to push stupid ideas! — Philip L. Puschel
  • State Sen. Michael L. Testa Jr., the one who proposed this, is a Republican. — Jenn Mac
  • Totally stupid. Our bay has been named from the beginning, for hundreds of years. These lawmakers are spending time on changing names, rather than helping people in their own states. Leave American history as is. — Denise Bella
  • Congrats to New Jersey on proving that Delaware is not the sole source of useless politicians. — Greg Doyle
  • Is there a contest out there to see who can come up with ridiculous ideas? Or if you can’t come up with a new one, try an idea that someone else came up with, especially if you want to stay in his or her good graces! What a waste of time and money redoing maps for no reasonable purpose. The Delaware River runs into the Delaware Bay, just like the Raritan River in Jersey runs into the Raritan Bay. For an administration wild about cutting costs, it makes no sense to have to redo maps, books, etc. Who foots that bill? Delaware is the First State, so it gets to keep the name! — Elaine Straughn
  • The Delaware River empties into the Delaware Bay. I guess the senator will want to rename the river, as well. With all the issues facing the American people these days, this is what concerns this lawmaker? It’s silly and a waste of time and energy. The only name that should change is the legislator’s; he should soon be called “former Sen. Michael Testa.” Vote him out. — Gary A. Knox
