Fourth-seeded Wesley College fell flat in their Capital Athletic Conference baseball tournament opener, dropping an 11-3 decision at Salisbury on Tuesday afernoon.

Wesley moves on to the next stage of the double-elimination tournament hosted by top-seeded Frostburg State. Wesley will face Penn State-Harrisburg on Thursday.

Eric Speidel, KeAndre Jones, and Christopher Seibert each recorded a pair of hits for the Wolverines. Jones, Trevor Mears and Mike Calvarese acounted for one RBI each.

Wesley trailed only 2-1 in the second after Seibert and Calvarese hit back-to-back doubles to get the Wolverines on the scoreboard. But the Sea Gulls kept adding to their lead, eventually stretching their advantage to 11-2 in the sixth.

St. Josephs 9, Delaware 4: The Blue Hens couldn’t overcame a rocky start as they lost their fourth straight game.

St. Joseph’s (18-14), which won its fifth game in a row, scored three runs in the first inning and five more in the second. The Hawks banged out 10 hits, turned four double plays, and had eight different pitchers combine for the win.

Delaware (21-15) got an outstanding effort from freshman pitcher Cole Benjamin who scattered eight hits over six scoreless innings.

The Hawks defeated the Hens for the fourth straight time and for the eight time in the last 10 meetings.

Delaware hosts in-state foe Wilmington today at 3 p.m. Sophomore pitcher Nick Spadafino (Dover) will make his first collegiate start.

Rutgers 12, Delaware State 8: The Scarlet Knights broke open a 6-6 game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on from there.

Led by four hits from Darnell Maisonet, DSU (9-27) collected 16 hits but stranded 11 runners on base. It was the first meeting between the two programs.

Tennis

Hornets seeded fourth: The Delaware State women’s tennis team will be the No. 4 North seed in this week’s MEAC championships in Norfolk, Va.

The top four teams in the MEAC’s Northern and Southern divisions qualified to compete for the league championship at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion. Opening-round play in the single-elimination tournament begins on Thursday.

Delaware State brings a seven-match winning streak into the tournament. At 10-3 (.769), the Hornets have the best overall record in the conference.

DSU’s Elvira Galieva has the MEAC’s best No. 3 singles record at 9-2, while teammates Maria Rachi is tops at No. 4 singles (6-1) and Colleen Beck has the best No. 6 singles mark at 6-0.

The Hornets are seeking their first MEAC championship victory since 2012.

Track & field

DSU places at Hampton: Delaware State’s Rayana Relerford finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.65 at the Hampton Relays over the weekend.

The Hornets’ team of Lauren Wood, Raquel Hughes, Tiffany Woods, and Loren Harris also crossed the finish line second in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:44.35.
